Light Architecture for Sports Design

In downtown Phoenix’s Warehouse District, the Phoenix Mercury + Suns HQ Practice Facility brings elite athletics, team operations, and architectural identity into one high-performance campus. Designed to support the next generation of professional sports infrastructure, the facility combines a dedicated Phoenix Mercury training environment with business headquarters for the Suns and Mercury organization, creating a workplace, practice venue, and community-facing landmark within the urban fabric.

The project demonstrates how a sports facility can move beyond utility and become an expressive piece of light architecture. Danpal’s translucent wall system plays a defining role in that transformation, shaping the building envelope with soft daylight by day and a glowing illuminated presence by night. The result is a façade that feels both technical and atmospheric—balancing privacy, visual impact, and performance for a program driven by focus, movement, and energy.

The translucent Danpal walls help bring natural light deep into the practice environment while reducing the harshness often associated with direct desert sun. Instead of relying on conventional opaque wall assemblies, the system creates a diffused luminous surface that supports visual comfort and gives the interior a clean, elevated training atmosphere. For athletes, coaches, and staff, the effect is immersive but controlled: daylight becomes part of the experience without overwhelming the space.

As a case study, the Phoenix Mercury + Suns HQ Practice Facility illustrates how daylighting products can become central to architectural storytelling. The translucent walls are not simply a surface treatment; they are a design strategy. They soften the desert light, elevate the training environment, and turn the façade into a memorable nighttime feature. In a campus built around performance, equity, and organizational culture, Danpal helps translate those values into a luminous architectural experience.

The schedule was extremely challenging with the expectations we had to meet the schedule from a design perspective, everything Danpal mentioned they could provide in time was met.
