Grande Nef
Translucent Walls for a Landmark Reborn
At La Grande Nef de l’Île-des-Vannes, light is not simply admitted into the building; it is restored as part of the architecture’s original identity. This landmark sports and cultural venue near Paris has been renewed with translucent Danpatherm® polycarbonate wall systems, preserving the building’s iconic luminous character while elevating its performance for contemporary use.
Designed seeking the balance between heritage, daylight, thermal comfort, and visual impact, the project demonstrates how Danpal® façade solutions can transform a large-scale building envelope into a high-performance architectural surface. The result is a soft, diffused interior atmosphere by day and a glowing civic presence by night.

A High-Performance Translucent Wall System for a Historic Paris Venue
The restoration of Grande Nef required more than a replacement façade; it called for a daylighting solution that could honor the building’s original architectural language while improving comfort, durability, and envelope performance. Danpal played a central role by supplying translucent wall systems that reintroduced the building’s signature quality of diffused natural light.
Using a Danpatherm® facade, the restored walls create a luminous skin that softens daylight across the expansive interior while giving the exterior its renewed civic presence. The system supports the project’s architectural intent: preserve the visual lightness of the historic structure, improve thermal and solar comfort, and deliver a durable translucent envelope suited to a major public venue.
For architects, Grande Nef is a clear example of restoration through performance-driven light architecture. The translucent walls do not simply enclose the building; they reactivate it. By day, they filter glare into calm, even illumination. By night, they allow the venue to glow from within, transforming a restored landmark into a contemporary architectural beacon
