Which is Better, Glass Or Polycarbonate, And Why?

Because of its durability, polycarbonate comes out on top if the question of which is better, glass or polycarbonate, arises whenever decisions on construction materials need to be made. Why is durability so important, and why does glass rate so poorly in the polycarbonate vs glass matchup? Glass is too fragile to withstand the fierce forces of nature that a building endures over the course of its life span. Unlike polycarbonate, glass is easily damaged by weather or other factors that affect the durability of a building material. Shattering glass in the event of weather damage has the potential to not only lead to structural problems but can also cause harm to the occupants of the building. Polycarbonate is the more dependable, economical, energy efficient building material and in this article, we will provide proof to convince you that it should be your choice.

Why Is Polycarbonate Stronger Than Glass?

There are several reasons why polycarbonate is stronger than glass. If you want to make a comparison of polycarbonate or glass, you’ll be interested to learn that polycarbonate, which is used in the making of bulletproof shields for police officers, is regarded as an almost unbreakable material. While few buildings are going to need to be bulletproof, there’s another foe that can inflict severe damage on a structure. Weather is the enemy of a building. If you pause to think of the instances of bad weather in the past year, everything from blizzards to downpours to hail to high winds will likely come to mind. At Danpal, we have more than half a century of weather insights under our belts and we know in order for a building to withstand the elements, it needs to be stronger than what nature inflicts upon it.

Why Is Polycarbonate Sheet Better Than Glass?

While we can attest with confidence to the ways in which glass is inferior to polycarbonate, we invite you to consider the different structures which would specifically be constructed out of polycarbonate or glass. Greenhouses are one of the most obvious examples. Polycarbonate’s superior thermal efficiency means that a greenhouse’s growing season can extend longer. Glass lacks insulation which prevents it from shielding plants from the cold. If the growing season is shorter, the heat will need to be run longer, which costs more money. The same goes for roofing system for commercial buildings.

Finding Out Which Is Better Glass or Polycarbonate

By now you’re probably asking yourself, “Is polycarbonate better than glass?” We’ve shown you why polycarbonate is stronger than glass. We’re going to expand upon that to demonstrate why polycarbonate is actually better, all around, than glass. Even if you’re not planning to build a greenhouse, you might be concerned about the kind of direct light that is going to be coming into your structure. Natural light is popular, but glare is not. Polycarbonate admits a softer light while traditional glass lets in the harsh lighting.

We’ve told you how polycarbonate is superior to glass in its ability to withstand the cold, harsh extremes of winter weather. You may not have known that polycarbonate is also superior when it comes to heat resistance. The properties of traditional glass don’t allow it to withstand high temperatures because it absorbs heat. Polycarbonate, on the other hand, can handle exposure to as much as 270 degree temperatures for several hours. Not only that, but it can actually withstand a sudden burst of extreme heat as high as 1166 degrees without breaking or distorting.

At Team Danpal, we can give you lots of reasons to choose polycarbonate when you’re debating the strengths of polycarbonate vs glass. Here’s one that will be the ultimate reason why you should go for polycarbonate. Glass, because it’s not as strong, is more likely to break and need replacing. Polycarbonate’s properties give it an impressive life span that lasts for a long time. That saves you money. Another way that polycarbonate can be a friend to your wallet? Its insulating properties stabilize thermal efficiency to shrink your building’s carbon footprint and save you money on utility costs.

At Danpal, our commitment to Global Vision, Local Focus, is our way of making sure that our clients get the best product for their money. Polycarbonate is stronger than glass, more energy efficient than glass, more durable than glass. So what do you think? Which is better, glass or polycarbonate?

Contact Danpal if you want to choose the best solutions for your construction.

Does Polycarbonate Discolor Over Time?

If you’re wondering whether to install glass or polycarbonate in your patio or shed or roof system, there’s one question that you’re probably asking yourself: Does polycarbonate discolor over time? You already know that polycarbonate is unequalled as a building material because of its impressive properties. While it weighs half as much as glass, its impact strength is 250 times that of glass! Its durability is another one of its commanding features. Polycarbonate, which is used in the making of bulletproof shields, is nearly unbreakable. Colored polycarbonate sheets bring in the added attraction of beauty, as tinted plastic roof panels can add a stunning visual appeal to a building. At Danpal, we’re happy to assure you that polycarbonate’s assets, including maintaining its color, far outweigh any features which glass possesses.

Why Does Polycarbonate Turn Yellow?

First, we’ll address the question: Does polycarbonate discolor over time? Aging of any building material is inescapable, just as aging affects our own bodies as we get older. A standard, uncoated polycarbonate sheet will retain its visual appearance for approximately 5 to 7 years before the constant exposure to direct sunlight will begin to cause yellowing and discoloration. What our research and development team at Danpal has done is find ways for polycarbonate to maintain its attractive appearance for a longer time. It’s true that clear polycarbonate, if it hasn’t been coated, is vulnerable to the effects of sunlight. Danpal’s UV coating can extend the life of polycarbonate sheets to 15 years so that it lasts longer and looks great.

That UV coating that protects polycarbonate also protects you. Approximately 10 percent of the radiation that the sun generates comes in the form of UV or ultraviolet rays. Too much exposure to UV rays can possibly lead to melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. It also can cause less dire conditions such as wrinkling of the skin and freckling.
Just as we want our own personal appearance to retain a healthy look for as long as possible, we want the same for our buildings. A colored façade does so much to enhance the impression that a building makes upon the surrounding structures. You’ll find the colors, tints, and finishes that you want for your building when you consult with Danpal’s experts. Let your imagination soar over the polycarbonate as if you’re an artist with a palette in your hands.

Those tinted polycarbonate roof panels don’t just give a structure eye-catching beauty, however. They’re also capable of keeping areas cooler when it’s hot outside, thanks to their capacity to cut up to 70 percent of solar energy and reduce the amount of radiation that’s coming inside.

Does Polycarbonate Discolor Over Time If Proper Cleaning Methods Are Used?

Polycarbonate is a low-maintenance building material that keeps its appearance without a great deal of extra work on your part. However, proper cleaning products and methods are an important way to extend the life span of your clear and colored polycarbonate. Never use cleaners that contain ammonia! Ammonia is a common ingredient in many popular household cleaning products, but it can spoil the appearance of the polycarbonate parts of your deck or conservatory.

Even the cloth that you use matters when cleaning polycarbonate. Don’t use a dry cloth, or you may end up rubbing the dirt into the colored polycarbonate sheets and scratching them. As strong as polycarbonate is, it is susceptible to scratching, so remember to clean with care.

If you’re looking for a roofing system that will give your patio or shed long-lasting performance and beauty, look to Danpal for the colored polycarbonate that is going to withstand the rigors of weather and time, and add a unique beauty to the neighborhood.

Smart Plastic Sheeting And Danpalon Systems Making Buildings Better

Danpal, with over half a century of cutting-edge expertise in the building industry, has nurtured the advance of smart plastic sheeting through Danpalon 3DLite and Danpalon Kinetic Systems. In order for a building to hold up against the elements of weather, while providing the utmost in comfort and energy efficiency, it needs to be made out of materials that are both smart and strong. The installation of polycarbonate panels made of Danpalon® Microcell polycarbonate panels with extrusion technology can reinforce the strength of a structure, as much as ten times more cells than most of the other polycarbonate panels available for purchase. When architectural design unites the most modern structural advances with the ageless appeal of sunlight, buildings and their occupants, and the planet, reap the benefits.

Smart Plastic Sheeting And Danpalon 3DLite

Smart plastic sheeting is, of course, a testimony to the advances that have been made in building materials. Daylight is rarely viewed as a building material and yet, with the innovative Danpalon 3DLite, natural light can be optimized so that architects can combine design and creativity. The results not only increase the efficiency of lighting but also contribute to enhanced energy efficiency. Alternating integrated shading louvres selectively manipulate the admission of sunlight throughout the day. This provides an additional advantage in the form of thermal insulation, which addresses personal comfort and environmental responsibility, and physical appearance, which appeals to the aesthetic senses. The Danpal building tradition combines function with beauty to deliver maximum satisfaction.

Optimizing daylight in architecture as varied as shopping malls, schools, and stadiums, 3DLITE is a cost-effective solution thanks to the alternating louvres that balance light during the daylight hours. Natural light has another facet that can be optimized when heat is reduced. The sun’s rays, allowed to enter at higher levels in morning and afternoon, lower the heat in midday. This carefully designed system of daylight architecture creates an intricate, yet simple, bond with nature.

Strong And Smart Polycarbonate Sheeting

The harnessing of natural light is the result of innovation and research on the part of Danpal’s expert engineering and design team. Advances such as smart plastic sheeting which lead to greater energy efficiency are matched by Danpalon® Microcell polycarbonate panels, which offer high impact resistance. The high concentration of cells supports improved mechanical properties. The tight spacing between the vertical supports contributes to the superior quality of light which is enjoyed by the occupants of interior living and working spaces.

Danpal technology brings together the aesthetic aspects of optimized natural light and the environmental advantages of energy conservation. Smart plastic sheeting, with the versatile properties of polycarbonate, is the building material for twenty-first century architecture.

Danpalon Kinetic And The Attributes Of Smart Plastic Panels

As is the case with Danpalon 3DLITE, Danpalon Kinetic furthers the harmony of a structure’s physical function, its responsiveness to the needs of the environment, and the amazing capacity of smart technology to take a building to the next level of innovation. Smart polycarbonate sheeting is as much a part of the modern architectural world as the natural light which predates all that we know about construction.

Who would ever have predicted that plastic panels would be able to meet the demands of thermal insulation, the transmission of light, and even the reduction of sound?

With Danpalon® Kinetic, the interplay of light and color creates animated facades that, with typical Danpal creativity, unleash the power of light with unexpected brilliance. Buildings are expected to provide shelter and comfort for the occupants within their walls. But Danpalon® Kinetic doesn’t just take care of the ones inside. With the dazzling light show that the building offers externally, even those who are outside the walls can enjoy the light show!

How Long Do Polycarbonate Roof Panels Last In Sun?

Danpal knows that in order for a building to be able to withstand the elements, its roofing needs to be stronger than the weather. It’s natural, when thinking of harsh weather, to immediately picture the winds, the snow, the rain and storms and the hail, as a roof’s main enemy. But what about the sun? There’s a lot of heat coming out of the sky, as, day after day in the hot weather months, the sun’s rays beat down upon the roof. Danpal’s engineers and designers have shown how effective polycarbonate roof panels can be in the contest between roofs and weather. But consumers are curious: is polycarbonate really the best choice for roofing material, and just how long do polycarbonate roof panels last in sun?

Polycarbonate Roof Panels And Extreme Hot And Cold Weather

The length of time that polycarbonate roof panels will last depends upon the maintenance that the roof is given, and the kind of weather that it’s exposed to. If a roof is well maintained, it can last between 10 to 20 years before it’s going to need to be replaced. There are even instances where the polycarbonate roof panels have lasted 30 years. Polycarbonate has the capability to resist extreme temperatures, both cold and hot. That feature makes polycarbonate roof panels particularly effective in climate zones all over the world.

If the building is located in a cold weather climate, where winters are harsh, the roofing panels may need replacing on a more frequent basis. Polycarbonate roofs often come with an extended warranty from the manufacturer, which attests to the durability of this popular building material.

Why Polycarbonate Roof Panels Are The Best Choice

Polycarbonate probably isn’t the first material that comes to mind if you’re in the market for a new roof. If you live in a region where hot weather is punishing, you should definitely consider the merits of polycarbonate. But in today’s climate-conscious world, where ecological responsibility is a priority for consumers, isn’t it time to consider choosing a roofing material that reflects your environmental priorities? Just because slate, asphalt, cement and wood are the more traditional roofing materials doesn’t mean that they’re the best choices for today’s architecture. In fact, as we do our best to help reduce our carbon footprint and keep our planet healthy, we’ve discovered that building materials can also play a vital role in this environmental rescue mission.

Polycarbonate is light in weight, so it’s easy to work with. It’s flexible. It’s cost-effective. It’s also uniquely designed to withstand weather. You’ve seen polycarbonate in conservatories and greenhouses but you might not have realized why it’s used so often in those structures? Polycarbonate, a thermoplastic, was originally used in these buildings because plants need to be able to thrive in a temperature-controlled atmosphere. It didn’t take long before architects realized that polycarbonate roofing panels that enable plants to thrive are also good for people.

Polycarbonate Roof Panels Are The Smart Money Choice

Unlike glass, polycarbonate is easy to customize. It can be shaped and re-sized onsite, which is a tremendous asset for construction crews. It doesn’t just come in various sizes, but it’s also available in different colors, which adds to its visual appeal. Get the roof system you need in order to be comfortable no matter what part of the world you live in. Sunny summers, freezing winters, and everything between, that’s the polycarbonate roof panel option.

Weather is weather and sun is sun, no matter if a building is commercial and residential. Isn’t it good to know that with polycarbonate roof panels, you can work and live in a structure that’s fortified by Danpal innovation?

Outdoor Plastic Sheets Made Of Polycarbonate Can Stand Up To Weather

When you consider the effects of weather and the elements, it makes sense to put some thought into the best type of outdoor plastic sheets that we should choose. For all the beauty of nature and its many charms, no one can deny that weather can be brutal. That’s why it’s so important to choose outdoor plastic sheets that are strong enough to stand up to weather. Maybe you have weatherproof plastic sheets, but what about UV rays? With all the details that need to be considered, we can offer some of the information that you’re going to need as you make your choice.

Polycarbonate Versus Other Outdoor Materials

It wasn’t that long ago when the materials that were used for outdoor applications—wood, metal, and of course glass—were limited by their own weaknesses. How could these materials, which were vulnerable to the punishment that weather delivers, possible last? As we know, they couldn’t last for long. Wood is extremely susceptible to the rigorous treatment that comes from torrential rains, high winds, heavy snows, and relentless sunshine. After only a year, wood would already be showing the damage that the outdoor elements caused. Glass, of course, is much too fragile to withstand the outdoors for long. An impact could shatter it. That weakness actually makes using glass risky. So what are the options? Fortunately, the arrival of polycarbonate on the scene completely altered the outdoor plastic sheets landscape.

Polycarbonate: The Better Option In Outdoor Plastic Sheets

The impact resistance of polycarbonate gives it a tremendous advantage when its function is to serve as weatherproof plastic sheets. Polycarbonate is used in security glass because it’s bulletproof. So just think about that the next time you hear the sound of hail pounding outside. If polycarbonate can stop a bullet, hail doesn’t stand a chance.

Polycarbonate is as reliable in resisting the harmful effects of sunshine as it is in defeating the more obvious forces of nature. Protective coating makes it UV ray resistant. Even with exposure to direct sunlight over time, polycarbonate weatherproof plastic sheets can be coated so that they resist yellowing. That extends the life of the outdoor plastic sheets. Just imagine how confident you’ll feel, no matter the weather, when you think of how your polycarbonate outdoor plastic sheets stand up to damage from both sun and impact.

Structures Where Polycarbonate Weatherproof Plastic Sheets Can Be Found

Some of our most familiar buildings such as hospitals and schools use outdoor plastic sheets. In addition, these sheets, with their polycarbonate strength, are also durable enough to withstand environments of harsh chemicals.

Another common place for outdoor plastic sheets to be used is in signage. Think of all the signage that you see on a daily basis. These signs are often in prominent locations on a building. Naturally, they’re exposed to the elements. But if you have weatherproof plastic sheets made of polycarbonate, you don’t have to worry that your signs will need replacing frequently.

Why You’ll Do Better With Polycarbonate Outdoor Plastic Sheets

To summarize, here are the reasons why you’re likely to turn to polycarbonate when selecting your weatherproof plastic sheets:

  1. Durability that can stand up to the harshest weather elements.
  2. Excellent transmission of light combined with UV protection so that sunlight is fun light without the risk.
  3. Light in weight makes for easy transportation and installation, saving time, labor, and money.

We all know that weather doesn’t make things easy for us. But with outdoor plastic sheets made of polycarbonate, weather’s power is canceled by polycarbonate’s strength.

Commercial Glazing Systems With Polycarbonate Are The New Frontier of Windows

It doesn’t matter whether you call it a storm door or commercial glazing systems, the aim is the same: to keep comfort and security inside, and to keep the rough elements of outside. When polycarbonate is used for this purpose, its innate strength, resilience, and thermal insulation benefit both residential and commercial properties. Gone are the days when only glass was considered for glazing purposes. No longer are architects restricted by the limitations of glass, which includes noticeable limitations in its performance. As time, technology, and energy concerns have become more mainstream, the possibilities offered by plastic glazing have replaced glass as the preferred material to use. And why not? Polycarbonate has greater impact resistance and is more flexible than glass, while offering the daylighting features that once made glass the most popular glazing material of its time. But this is a new era in building materials and a new frontier in commercial glazing systems, and we’re going to tell you more about the wonders of polycarbonate.

The Advantages Of Using Polycarbonate In Commercial Glazing Systems

Numbers tell the tale of why polycarbonate has swiftly replaced glass as the glazing choice for architects who design buildings, the construction crews who build them, and the consumer who occupies the structure. Vastly superior in impact and shatter resistance, when polycarbonate is included as part of commercial glazing systems, it offers more than one hundred times the strength of glass. It’s also light in weight, which means that it’s easy to work with, and that’s always a popular feature for construction crews. The layer of UV protection applied to the side of the plastic glazing provides protection from the sun’s rays, increasing the life span of the polycarbonate sheet.

Using Polycarbonate In Plastic Glazing

Did you know that glazing is more than just exterior facing windows? Polycarbonate shows up in a variety of other applications, both indoors and outdoors. Some of the most familiar examples of indoor glazing include cladding, furniture, mirrors, partitions, balustrades, glass floors, and acoustic glass.

Outdoor polycarbonate commercial glazing systems are equally familiar. You’ve seen this plastic sheeting used in solar panels; you might even have noticed it in atriums. In today’s sometimes unpredictably violent world, the strength of polycarbonate is a safety feature commonly used in drive-through windows at fast-food eateries and banks. Polycarbonate is also valued for its protection against nature, when double- or triple-glazed windows, also known as storm windows, are a barrier against the impact of powerful storms and hurricanes.

Daylighting As Part Of Plastic Glazing

We look out of windows and we see the world outside. But with polycarbonate plastic glazing, we can bring the outside into our interior spaces while, at the same time, relishing the other attributes of this versatile building material. It’s strong enough to stop bullets, yet it’s able to let natural light inside so that we benefit from the positive effects of sunlight

Polycarbonate is such an adaptable building material that it’s virtually transformed the industry. When commercial glazing systems are this easy to use, the buildings themselves are transformed. Danpal’s commercial glazing systems not only offer the obvious advantages of superior impact resistance and the energy efficiency of thermal insulation, but they show how plastic glazing is a bold new frontier. It’s also worth noting that these windows meet government glazing standards. Their contribution to the specifications that are required for security concerns helps to create environments that are safer.

Yield Strength of Polycarbonate: Bends But Doesn’t Break

What Is The Yield Strength Of Polycarbonate?

Before we can explain the yield strength of polycarbonate, we need to first understand that yield strength, which defines an object according to its rigidity or pliability, is the point when the object becomes plastic instead of elastic. Its yield strength is the maximum amount of stress that a material is capable of withstanding before permanent deformation occurs.

Pliability is a factor that is significant when making selections of building materials. Because polycarbonate is justifiably touted as a superior material in terms of its strength and its flexibility, these features have shown that glass, once a very popular construction material, is inferior in the metrics that matter for architects, manufacturers, and consumers. Polycarbonate is soft, light in weight, and thin, but that doesn’t mean that it’s weak. In fact, polycarbonate bends, but does not break. Instead, it absorbs the impact. Glass, on the other hand, shatters.

Crunching The Numbers For The Yield Strength Of Polycarbonate

When we realize that polycarbonate is 250 times stronger than glass, and is able to resist temperatures up to 240 degrees Fahrenheit, we begin to understand the way in which the yield strength of polycarbonate affects the construction options available to architects.

Polycarbonate owes its strength to a powerhouse chemical structure, with the strong bonds exhibited by its molecules. Because polycarbonate boasts both strength and flexibility, it’s able to absorb the force of an impact and be restored to its prior shape. This feature gives polycarbonate the edge in terms of its resilience to weather: the force of hail, rain, snow, and wind packs a punch but polycarbonate is strong enough to take it.

Double Wall Sheeting Contributes To the Yield Strength of Polycarbonate

Double wall polycarbonate sheets are thicker, with multi layers that contribute to superior thermal insulation. Insulation is always a matter of concern for homeowners because energy efficiency is a priority for today’s consumers, who place an emphasis on environmental responsiveness. Those layers that fortify the insulating properties of polycarbonate also enhance this building material’s resistance to impact. As each layer is capable of absorbing a portion of the pressure, the effect of the impact is distributed throughout and prevents a single area from taking its full force.

When constructing a building feature that needs to incorporate flexibility into its function, double wall polycarbonate is preferred to solid polycarbonate, because it adapts more readily to movement.

Structures That Demonstrate The Yield Strength of Polycarbonate

Sometimes it’s easier to understand yield strength when we consider the types of products which use polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is bullet-proof, a feature which significantly enhances its usage in safety products such as goggles and riot shields. Double wall polycarbonate is often in the building of garages, carports, and conservatories. Solid polycarbonate is an excellent substitute for glass because it allows sunlight to enter, which is why it’s so often used in greenhouses.

The Difference Between Yield Strength and Tensile Strength

These two categories of strengths are important factors when the material’s critical mechanical properties are reviewed. While yield strength is identified as the maximum pressure that a material can bear until it reaches the point where it is no longer able to be restored to its original dimensions, tensile strength measures the maximum point of stress beyond which the material actually breaks. If a material is brittle, its tensile strength is the most important metric to consider. If it is a ductile material, then its yield strength reveals more about its performance capabilities.

Knowing the yield strength of polycarbonate is one of the ways in which the incredible flexibility and strength of this building material can be most appreciated. Glass can’t compare to polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate Glass And The Choice You’ll Make

Did you know that the polycarbonate glass competition is the building industry’s equivalent of a World Cup matchup or an Olympic medal bout? For a long time, glass ruled when it came to popularity, both from its longstanding heritage as a traditional material and also, in contemporary times, for its positive environmental qualities. But even though glass is attractive, and even though it can be continually recycled, glass makes a poor showing when it’s competing against polycarbonate. Isn’t it time you learned more about this remarkable building material and how well it fares in the polycarbonate glass competition?

Polycarbonate, Glass, and Impact Resistance

Unless you’ve taken up residence in a tree house, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ve been inside a building that uses polycarbonate as one of its structural components. Schools and hospitals, in particular, include polycarbonate in their construction because it’s 200 times stronger than glass. Polycarbonate is especially popular in greenhouses. The polycarbonate glass struggle for supremacy isn’t even much of a struggle, because polycarbonate can match the ability of glass to transmit natural light indoors while maintaining superior strength. If you’re looking for a material that’s durable and resistant to weather while still offering the esthetic features of glass, you’re looking for polycarbonate.

Maybe you’re still leaning toward glass for your construction project, and you’ve heard that polycarbonate scratches easily. That’s true, but that’s not the end of the story. Because clear polycarbonate surfaces need to be protected from scratches, the solution is to coat the sheeting with a layer that’s scratch-resistant.

What About Polycarbonate Glass And Heat?

The insulating properties of a building material matter more than ever in today’s energy efficient consumer climate. People don’t want their homes and workplaces to contribute to the ongoing climate change crisis. As far as insulating ability goes, glass is far inferior to polycarbonate. Polycarbonate supports a constant indoor space temperature because of its superior thermal efficiency. In the cold days and nights of winter, it reduces some of the need for heating; in the warm weather, it reduces the need for air conditioning. At the same time as it’s making a building more energy efficient, it’s reducing the structure’s carbon footprint.

The polycarbonate glass contest isn’t much of a challenge when we’re considering transparent roofing. That’s because polycarbonate, which totally blocks ultra-violet radiation, is a much better choice than glass, which does not have this ability.

There’s another bonus for a polycarbonate glass battle. Because polycarbonate is a thermoplastic, it’s capable of enduring temperatures that reach 155 degrees Celsius before it melts. But even if it does melt, it can be cooled, re-heated, and reformed.

Transporting Polycarbonate Glass

Not only is polycarbonate the better building material choice when it’s installed onto a structure, but it’s even superior before installation! Its light weight makes it easy to transport to the construction site, and its flexibility makes it easy to customize to suit architectural designs. Glass, on the other hand, is heavier, and not flexible at all.

Consumers sometimes have the wrong impression that a heavier, more solid material is the stronger option for a building, but as you can see from this information, the polycarbonate glass matchup only has one champion: polycarbonate. Its flexibility and durability make it the stronger of the two building choices. What does this mean for a consumer? Count the windows in your home or even workplace. Now think about how often they might need to be replaced. With polycarbonate windows, a longer life span means fewer windows being replaced. This moneysaver is also more convenient.

There you have it; in the polycarbonate glass battle, there’s only one victor and it’s polycarbonate.

Is Polycarbonate Flexible As A Building Material?

For everyone who has asked “Is polycarbonate flexible?”, we suggest that all you need to do is look around you at the products that are made of it. Polycarbonate shows up in items as varied as the car that you drive, the music that you listen to, the lighting fixtures in your home, and the glasses that you wear. Polycarbonate’s advantages in eyewear come from its light weight and because it has a natural UV filter. That’s one of the charms of the building material; it offers so much in terms of flexibility and usage, and has so many advantages over glass. A building material that can be shaped has an appeal both for professional architects and builders, but also for ordinary men and women intent on a home remodeling project. You don’t even need to use heat to mold polycarbonate into the desired shape. Because of the inherent strength of polycarbonate; it doesn’t break, even if you shape the sheet while it’s cold. Keep reading to learn more about the remarkable flexibility of polycarbonate and reasons why there’s such a contemporary focus on polycarbonate in architecture.

Is Polycarbonate Flexible Enough For Construction?

A material as versatile as polycarbonate is remarkable because its flexibility allows it to be adapted for a multitude of products. A material such as polycarbonate, which can be reshaped without breaking or even cracking, is capable of withstanding impacts that would shatter lesser materials. Combining strength and flexibility make polycarbonate a vastly more popular choice than glass for residential and commercial design.

Placing The Focus On Polycarbonate In Architecture And Its Environmental Advantages

The versatility and durability that polycarbonate displays in so many applications are some of the reasons why it’s a popular choice for building materials. Strength is a paramount consideration when an architect is designing a structure, whether it’s for commercial or residential use. A building must be strong enough to shelter the occupants within. It must be able to withstand the rigors of weather, which can, according to the season, deliver fierce punishment in the form of snow, rain, wind, hail, and even sunlight. Polycarbonate easily answers that call because it’s lighter than glass, but 200 times stronger. But unlike glass, polycarbonate is easier to shape. Another winning attribute of the material is its resistance to moisture. Because it doesn’t absorb moisture, the surface of polycarbonate is not readily susceptible to scratching .

Once the building has been constructed, its internal performance becomes a major consideration. For today’s consumer, environmental concerns are as much a priority as the durability of the building itself. Polycarbonate is easily recycled, which is always an advantage for any building material. Once again, polycarbonate is superior to glass in its energy-saving properties. Polycarbonate is a superior insulator, much better than glass. The lower energy costs that accompany effective insulating capabilities are a winning combination for consumers paying utility bills.

Esthetics matter as well in the construction of a building. Glass has long been a popular building material because it’s transparent and adds to its appeal. But glass is not flexible. Nor is it easy to work with. Polycarbonate brings its visual attractions, along with its light weight and flexibility, to such architectural features such as skylights.

How Is Polycarbonate Flexible As A Plastic?

Plastics are not known for being flexible. But polycarbonate, a thermoplastic, softens when it’s heated. Yet polycarbonate is also flexible when cold bending is applied. In fact, cold bending is the typical process used in shaping the material. Polycarbonate is not just something that building professionals use; even if you’re an amateur do-it-yourselfer, you can bend a sheet of polycarbonate with a heating coil or a filament. If these items aren’t available, you can shape the sheet with an oven or paint burner.

With so much to offer, polycarbonate can transform the look and performance of a building while adding to its visual appeal.

Polycarbonate UV Resistance Keeps You Safe From Ultraviolet Radiation

Does Polycarbonate Block UV?

We need to be protected from ultraviolet radiation, and polycarbonate UV resistance accomplishes that because of the nature of polycarbonate itself. It’s worth noting that polycarbonate panels themselves need to be protected from ultraviolet radiation. At Danpal, the quality of our building materials, and the safety of the people in those buildings, is a priority. That’s right; not only do we pay attention to the people who work and live beneath a polycarbonate roofing system, but Danpal also employs measures to ensure that the sheets themselves are manufactured with polycarbonate UV protection. That’s accomplished by the application of layers of protective coating on the polycarbonate sheets.

Where Polycarbonate UV Resistance Is Needed

UV stands for ultraviolet radiation waves that are shorter than light and longer than X-rays. Approximately 10% of the radiation that the sun generates is ultraviolet radiation waves. The atmosphere absorbs most of the dangerous UV radiation. The occupants of buildings and homes with polycarbonate panels can be assured that polycarbonate UV protection is part of the architectural design, not for themselves, but for the building material.

Too much exposure to the sun brings significant risks, but those aren’t risks you’ll incur by sitting under a polycarbonate roof. People know that ultraviolet radiation outside can increase the danger of skin cancer; in fact, deadly melanoma correlates with degrees of ultraviolet exposure. You don’t want to be running the risk of exposing yourself to Ultraviolet B or UVB, which causes different degrees of sunburn and can also cause cancer. Ultraviolet A or UVA is associated with wrinkles as the skin ages prematurely. When exposed to ultraviolet waves, cornea damage to the eyes can result, possibly leading to the formation of cataracts.

Ultraviolet radiation also inflicts damage on inanimate objects as well, which is why polycarbonate UV protection is important for the panels themselves.

Does Polycarbonate Sheet Block UV?

The good news is that polycarbonate is able to block both Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B by absorbing the radiation and preventing it from being transmitted. Polycarbonate UV resistance can actually protect the skin better than sun block creams; even a very thin polycarbonate sheet absorbs the UV rays. While blocking the UV waves, the polycarbonate panels still transmit visible light, so that colors can be seen.

That information explains why polycarbonate UV protection is a smart move for a swimming pool that has polycarbonate roofing. The ultraviolet radiation is fully blocked and the natural light is transmitted.

So if you’re wondering, “Does polycarbonate sheet block UV,” the answer is yes. Unlike glass, fiberglass, and acrylic, polycarbonate in its natural form can block ultraviolet radiation.

Then Why Does Polycarbonate Need Polycarbonate UV Protection?

The protection that polycarbonate panels offer is derived from absorbing the ultraviolet radiation. Over time, the polycarbonate sheets would become yellowed or discolored. The deterioration of the polycarbonate would weaken the material and eventually cause it to break. Polycarbonate UV resistance is a means of protecting the polycarbonate from the degradation of its properties.

In order to shield the polycarbonate from discoloring and yellowing, manufacturers provide a very thin protective coating. The coating is so thin that the naked human eye cannot detect it. The coating will not affect the look or performance of the polycarbonate sheet. What it does accomplish is to safeguard the polycarbonate’s performance. Even if the polycarbonate material is part of a structure that’s located in a punishing and hot environment—think Australia, the Middle East, and parts of the American Southwest—this protection allows the sheet to retain its clarity.

The protective layer is generally applied to one side of the sheet, although both sides can be coated. What matters is that the side of the sheet that faces the sun and bears its full force has the protective coating.

What this means is that polycarbonate UV protection keeps you safe by absorbing ultraviolet rays. But polycarbonate UV resistance is needed so that the material itself will not deteriorate over time as a result of the ultraviolet absorption.

Adding A Walkway Canopy To Your Design

A walkway canopy is architecture’s way of turning the outdoors into a comfort zone for both commercial and residential settings. Whether your need for a covered walkway canopy is for a home or business environment, you’ll appreciate the benefits that Danpal manufacturing and design bring to canopy architecture. Walkway canopies are often seen in outdoor restaurant seating, where they provide covering for diners but also add to the ambience of the establishment. They are also seen in home landscaping, where they can add a festive touch to the exterior appearance of a house. But a Danpal walkway canopy design is much more than a piece of canvas on a pole. The famed Danpal reputation for innovation and visual appeal makes polycarbonate canopy design an attractive and useful feature for your building.

Of course, we immediately think of the ways that walkway canopy systems offer shelter from the elements, but even the simplest of walkway awnings can transform the visual aspect of the landscape. A street of shops distinguished by the items that are sold within, but connected by an exterior walkway canopy, gives a commercial zone a picturesque appearance. In a domestic setting, a covered walkway canopy at a festive occasion shields guests from rain as they enjoy the fresh air and the company of others. Whether you’re enjoying alfresco dining at your favorite restaurant or chatting with friends at a neighborhood get-together, you can appreciate the ways in which an outdoor walkway canopy enhances the occasion.

A Danpalon Canopy Redefines Outdoor Architectural Canopy Design

Don’t be confused when we talk of daylighting architecture and canopy roof design in the same sentence. The combination of natural light and architecture has brought about a dynamic partnership between what nature can provide and what technology can enhance.

Danpal is a pioneer in daylighting architecture, the process by which natural light becomes one of the building components of a design. Of course, as soon as Danpal is part of the conversation about canopy roof material, the conversation turns to a polycarbonate roof canopy. It’s light in weight and easy to work with, which gives it a versatility that’s especially convenient for an outdoor setting. You’ve seen polycarbonate canopy systems in a variety of locations, and you’re used to seeing polycarbonate used in conservatories, garages, decks, patios and even pool covers. It’s practically unbreakable, which helps to explain how polycarbonate canopy design has captivated the imagination of architects.

Because it’s 250 times stronger than conventional glass, polycarbonate is able to hold up against harsh weather. That means that whether the season features extreme cold or extreme heat, polycarbonate covered walkways are up to the challenge.

The Walkway Canopy Of Hwa Hun

Located near Seoul near Bukhansan Mountain in Korea, Hwa Hun or “Blooming House” is a brilliant example of how Danpal materials and stunning architecture combine to create a design that is both aesthetically impressive and structurally superior. The house not only uses Danpalon® in its Danpal façade system but also in its walkway canopy, where Danpalon® is placed over steel pipes. An architectural canopy is an invigorating element for a residence or a business that also adds to the appeal of the neighborhood.

The Advantages Of Danpalon® For Your Walkway Canopy

The reason why Danpalon® panels are the preferred choice for canopy roof systems is easy to understand. It’s well known in the construction industry that any Danpal product is subjected to rigorous in-house quality control testing so that the final results meet Danpal standards. Because Danpal is an international company with a thriving commercial presence on five continents, its global markets are an important consideration when manufacturing materials for export. Danpal products perform to excel regardless of where they are installed: whether it’s the Alps of France or the Australian Outback, Danpal manufactures materials that will be durable enough to withstand weather conditions all over the world.

Walkway CanopyVersatility Of Materials And Colors In Walkway Canopies

For business establishments that want to make sure the external features of their setting enhance the overall appearance and don’t detract from the impression that’s made on customers, there are various options to choose from when considering polycarbonate canopy details.

You might choose simple walkway canopies that are utilitarian in function, or you might be aiming for a more elaborate presentation that adds visual appeal. Danpal offers various options in building canopy design that will meet the widest range of customer preferences.

Walkway Canopies Provide Shelter From The Elements

People love being outside, until bad weather makes an appearance. With the arrival of summer, more events are held outside. For restaurants welcoming the return to normal after the constraints imposed by COVID, outdoor seating remains a popular option. An attractive walkway canopy design is a visual way for a business to look inviting.

Diners sitting at a table might have an umbrella to shelter them from harsh sunshine or blustery conditions, but servers bringing menu items to those tables can benefit from a canopy that shields the transit paths from exposure. Danpal flexibility and ease of access are always an important factor when making a decision on the dimensions of the walkway canopy that’s needed.

Optimizing Natural Light With Danpal’s Walkway Canopy Systems

Danpal is a pioneer in daylighting architecture, the process by which natural light becomes one of the building components of a design. Whether you are in the market for a walkway canopy or skylight roofing or any of the Danpal systems, it’s quite likely that you’ll want to check out the options that come with daylighting architecture. Studies have shown that adding more natural light improves productivity and nurtures a sense of wellness. In these stressful times, a little more sunshine can go a long way toward making building structures more holistic for those inside.

Jules Ladoumègue Sports Complex, a Sun-Shade Blades In Deep Red

In Paris, the land is rare and expensive. It is on the site previously occupied by the Jules Ladoumègue Sports Stadium that the walls of a new Maintenance and Storage Site (SMR) for the T3 tramway line have just been built.

It was unthinkable that the Jules Ladoumègue would no longer offer its sports facilities to the district – so the stadium was simply rebuilt on the roof of the new building and now faces the ring road. Today, it includes a soccer field, a rugby field, and as a buffer between them and the noise of the traffic, a long building housing tennis courts.

The west wall is Controlite®, with integrated brise soleil to protect from strong light and manage solar gain.

On the Facades east side,  the Jules Ladoumègue Sports Complex, which faces the sports fields, the Danpalon® wall is covered by a horizontal wooden lattice filter. Dietmar Feichtinger, the project architect, designed it as “a kind of artificial landscape, evocative of the synthetic grass”.

The covered tennis courts are a nod to the new Paris Philharmonic concert hall, located in the neighboring park of La Villette, with alternating red and transparent Danpalon® panels evocative of piano keys. “Red is a color that also features inside, in various materials, such as the cloth on the ceiling. It’s a theme that runs through the building”, concludes Dietmar Feichtinger making the Jules Ladoumègue Sports Complex an outstanding area for multi-sports.

Stadium Soong-Eui, in Incheon, Spacious and Lightness

Monumental! This is the term that comes to mind when you see the new soccer stadium Soong-Eui, in Incheon, Korea. It is integrated into a total of 9-hectare mixing sports facilities, offices, stores and residences, intended to revitalize the economic growth of the city.

Designed by Rossetti, an American architectural firm and Mooyoung, a Korean firm, the master plan of this new neighborhood reflects the marine culture in this port city in making a reference to waves, winds, and ships.

With its dynamic shape and the curve of its roof, the stadium evokes the outlines of a vessel fending the waves. With a capacity of nearly 21,000 seats, it will host the matches in the local club and especially the 17th Asian Games in 2014.

On the upper part, the cover protecting the spectators is executed in Danpalon®.

”I chose this material for its durability, resistance to impact, and because it forms waterproof roofing,” explains Shim Sang-Chul, an architect. Another challenge and a significant one: the length of the required components.

“In some places, the roofing of Stadium Soong-Eui reaches 32 m in length. We needed a material that is available in these dimensions, which is the case with Danpalon®. As itis extremely lightweight, it needs only a thin supporting structure.” The aluminum connectors participate in this clean appearance and delicacy of structure, “while creating a solid whole, made to last a long time,” concludes Shim Sang-Chul.

Plastic facade panels

Different building materials, like anything else, enjoy different cycles of popularity.  We’ve come a long way since medieval times when building designers were limited to wood and brick if they were charged with constructing a massive project that would reflect the glory of the reigning monarch.  And as April 2019 fire at Notre Dame Cathedral proved, the stone walls and interior were able to withstand the blaze, but the wooden roof and spire could not. In today’s world, we have more durable materials to work with. One of those materials, polycarbonate, is used to make plastic façade panels that are part of countless Danpal projects

The Advantages Of Using Polycarbonate For Plastic Façade Panels

Polycarbonate façade panels must be stronger than the weather that pounds them on a regular basis and polycarbonate, which is 200 times stronger than tempered glass, has shown itself to be resistant to the elements. In fact, when polycarbonate is co-extruded with advanced inhibitors, it has the capacity to last the life cycle of the building. Polycarbonate thermoplastics are used for safety glasses, riot gear, sports equipment and bullet proofing, so that gives you some idea of just how strong they are.  Another advantage of polycarbonate is its flexibility; polycarbonate polymers are able to be curved organically so that they take on the shape of the building. This flexibility displays itself in another unique fashion; although polycarbonate materials are so much stronger than glass, they are actually less than half its weight.

Plastic Façade Panels And Thermal Efficiency

As a society, we are very conscious of the plight of the environment and energy-conscious consumers strive to do what we can to protect the planet.  Plastic façade panels are one way to do that. When a polycarbonate thermoplastic is extruded into a multicell panel, it’s possible to achieve U-values below 1.0Ug (W/m2.K). Plastic façade panels made with polycarbonate materials can help a building achieve a green rating, something that’s a mark of excellence in our world today.

Translucent exterior wall panels

The exterior of a building has quite a job to do in order to protect everything on the interior of the structure. It has a functional role in the performance of the structure. It must be strong enough to withstand the onslaught of weather—pouring rain, heavy snow, damaging hail, high winds—that comes along with the seasons. It must also present an attractive appearance that suits the neighborhood in which it is located. If it does all these things, then the exterior can be relied upon to do its job.

Part of the arsenal of defense that a building uses in this mission includes the translucent exterior wall panels which define the success of the structure. That success, proven by the popularity of the product, takes the performance of the panels and highlights it with an impressive visual appeal that expresses the architect’s creative inspiration.

Translucent Exterior Wall Panels Are Weather Barriers

Microcell technology is the magic weapon that Danpal uses to produce its translucent external wall panels, to make them strong enough to hold off the punishment that the four seasons of the year can inflict on a building.  Danpal translucent panels also include UV protection from the effects of the sun so that, no matter what weather action is going on in the sky, the building has a defense.

Translucent External Wall Panels  Create Esthetic Appearances

Danpal products consistently deliver on performance, standing up to the elements throughout the year. In addition, they also look good while they’re doing it.

Architects treasure Danpal’s sense of color and creativity in developing translucent wall panels that balance light and offer tonal qualities so that the finished result matches the designer’s original vision.

Insulated Polycarbonate Roof Panels

How To Insulate Polycarbonate Roof?

One of the most important parts of a building is insulation. It’s not enough to have good insulation.  Insulation can only perform its function if it’s protected from the moisture that rain and snow can leave behind.  Dry insulation plays a crucial role in the life of a building, but it’s also vital for the health and wellbeing of the building’s occupants. If insulation has been compromised by moisture, it becomes a welcome environment for the spread of mold, which can cause serious health problems for people living or working in the structure who suffer from respiratory conditions such as asthma or allergies.  That’s why insulation needs all the help it can get. Thanks to Danpal, Polycarbonate Roof Panels offer just the help a building needs!

How Insulated Polycarbonate Roof Panels Work

Insulation is a vital component in the efficient operation of a building’s heating and cooling systems, which should offer a steady temperature inside throughout the entire year and all four seasons of the calendar.
The added insulation of polycarbonate roofing, which has air between the layers, reduces the loss of heat. It keeps out the harmful UV rays from the sun, while at the same time allowing natural light to enter.

Polycarbonate Roof Panels And Where They’re Used

Polycarbonate roof can be installed either as a single layer, which is customary in greenhouses or in multiple layers, which is what is typically seen in a residence or business.
Keeping the right temperature for a building is both an environmental as well as an economical matter. Lost energy that escapes costs you money because it increases what you’re paying to keep your building warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

At the same time, escaping energy is a burden to the environment as we all strive to maintain sustainable lifestyles. Insulated polycarbonate roof panels add an extra layer of protection for your wallet and the world in which we live.

Double Glazed Facade

Double glazed facade is designed so that air flows within the gap between the two facades. The Danpathern panels in the façade system allows either the interior or exterior one to be removed without reducing the effectiveness of the weather protection.  This is an obvious advantage when considering long-term maintenance. Danpal prides itself on the ease of installation of its products, something which is demonstrated fully with its double glazed facades.

Double Glazed Façade Design Saves Time and Money

The Danpatherm panels are pre-fabricated at the factory and arrive at the worksite ready to be installed.  The efficiency of this production process reduces the amount of time and number of workers who are needed for the installation of the system. Whenever time is saved, the economic advantage shows up soon after in the bank account.  The efficiency of production is a Danpal characteristic, one which is appreciated by architects and clients alike.

Double Polycarbonate Facades Reinforce Protection From The Elements

Danpatherm is a Danpal product that possesses superior thermal properties, making it particularly adept at storing and transmitting heat. It also possesses the level of strength that is wind-resistant, keeping out those parts of nature that belong outside, not in.

Double Skin Facade Bring In Natural Light

Another special attraction of the Danpal double skin facade is the way that natural light is incorporated into the interior of the structure.  Controlite System, which is made of translucent glazing materials, has internal louvres which adjust in order to maintain a no-glare interior space within the rooms. This provides natural light that results in better visibility, contributes to the comfort of the interior, and spares the occupants from the glare that would be present outside. No need for sunglasses inside, even if the sunlight is present!

Best Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets

In an interview, architect Oscar Torrejón described his satisfaction with the Danpal products used in the refurbishment of the Dominican Republic’s Studio Legal Terrero & Mejía. He said that the Danpal products he worked with “exceeded all expectations.” That level of praise is familiar to the Danpal team because, after over half a century in the industry, our reputation for quality is celebrated across the globe. It explains why we can offer the best polycarbonate roofing sheets, so that a building, right from the top, starts at the top!
But you don’t have to be an architect to be a confirmed pro-polycarbonate fan. Even a do-it-yourselfer can tackle a DIY project with confidence, thanks to the lightweight, durable, easily installed polycarbonate sheets.

DIY – Polycarbonate Roofing Systems

For many people, the COVID19 pandemic was a good opportunity to get some home repair projects done around the house. During that period when we couldn’t go anywhere anyway, many of us took the opportunity to get creative with a toolbox. Many of the do-it-yourself amateurs found out that they did a pretty good job, whether they were noticing places where the roof needed some repair, or they wanted a project to occupy their time and leave them with results that they could be proud of. What they found was that it was a lot easier to work with polycarbonate roofing sheets because they’re light in weight and easy to carry. Why lug around a heavy load when you have the option of going light and going better? That’s right, going better, because lightweight polycarbonate roof panels don’t sacrifice strength or durability. The projects moved along quickly because of the ease of installation. Injuries were reduced because the materials were easier to lift and move.

If your latest building project is a greenhouse or a conservatory, you might want to consider multiwall polycarbonate roof panels. Not only are they durable, but when combined with as many as seven layers, they can provide excellent insulation for the space beneath.

Solid polycarbonate sheets present another option for building designs that makes them ideal for greenhouses or balcony screens. Installation is safer than what traditional glass panels offer, and these shatterproof polycarbonate roofing systems deliver 200 times more impact resistance than double glazing can provide.

The Best Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets Make the Best Roofing System

Polycarbonate is a building material that automatically enhances the composition of whatever architectural aspect for which it’s used. Our polycarbonate sheets are made with microcell technology, which is celebrated for being the most advanced system used in daylight applications. As a pioneer in daylighting architecture, Danpal recognized the advantages of polycarbonate from the beginning. You want a roofing system that can withstand a range of weather conditions: Danpal polycarbonate roofing panels can do that. You want a roofing system that delivers the ideal balance between light and thermal dynamics: Danpal polycarbonate roofing sheets can do that.

You rely on your roof to shield your home or business from the outside elements. A polycarbonate roofing system does that and more. In addition to keeping you and your family warm and dry inside no matter what the weather is like outside, the polycarbonate roofing system has an added advantage: its esthetic qualities enhance your home’s appearance, adding to its value and appeal.

How the Polycarbonate Roof Panels Achieve Results And What Are The Advantages

Weather is a tough adversary. No matter where you live, there’s sure to be an element of weather that you find especially challenging. If it’s challenging for you, just think of what a building has to put up with from the outdoors! But Danpal products are tougher, and our polycarbonate roofing sheets are designed with a double-tooth, grip-lock connection for high resistance to powerful winds, heavy snow, and hail. Flexibility is also a trait of our advantages of polycarbonate roofing sheets, which have snap-on, dry-glazed connectors. In order to provide a long life for the roofing system, the Danpalon® panels have a co-extruded UV protection.

Factor in the high-impact resistance with low-scratch resistance and it’s obvious why polycarbonate roofing sheets are the building material of choice for architects. It’s a material that’s easy to make, cut, and mold, and there’s nothing a builder likes better than working with a product that enhances the efficiency of the project. Polycarbonate can be processed and shaped at room temperature because its glass transition temperature of 147 degrees (C) allows it to soften gradually when the temperature increases. Significant plastic deformations won’t make polycarbonate crack or break. In prototyping applications needing transparent or electrically non-conductive components, polycarbonate sheets beat sheet metal, which lacks this versatility.

Here’s another added bonus in using polycarbonate materials that you might not have thought of. Because polycarbonate roofing panels are lighter in weight, they are easier to transport, which means that carbon emissions are lower during transit. Maybe you never thought of roof repair as the smart ecological choice, but if you have a polycarbonate roof panels, you’re already making sound environmental decisions.

External facade cladding

External facade cladding is a feature of the CONTROLITE® daylighting system that employs the strength of polycarbonate and the appeal of natural light to create an optimum architectural design. Take a look at the Tonsley Mab structure in Australia to judge for yourself what a difference the splendid array of light makes in its appearance. Thanks to Danpal, natural light, once the exclusive property of Mother Nature, is now readily available, and with it come the benefits of an energy-efficient, esthetically pleasing daylighting system that keeps weather and moisture from causing problems inside.

External Facade Cladding Keeps Moisture From Penetrating

Weather is a tough opponent for a building. No matter where you live, you’re at the mercy of the elements.  Heavy rains batter a building’s defenses; high winds and hail can damage the exterior of a structure, and winter, with its ice and snow, brings with it the threat of moisture that can easily invade the interior. But with Danpal’s external facade cladding, a building has built-in protection from the harsh punishment of weather.

Bring in the Daylight and Energy Efficiency Follows

Daylighting architecture doesn’t just make a living and working space that’s better for the occupants of the building. It’s also an environmental asset in terms of energy usage.  CONTROLITE® allows you to have control over the amount of daylight that comes inside and this feature lets you adjust according to the seasons. In the winter, when the mood-lifting light from daytime is so welcome, you can bring in the brightness.  In the summer, you can control the levels of sunlight that enter. In all instances, you’re also affecting the amount of heating and cooling that you need, which can optimize your energy usage and cut your expenses. Saving money while using your energy responsibly is another  bonus of Danpal’s superior quality external facade cladding.

Danpatherm – The Bearer of Light

As architecture moves forward, buildings face the ever-evolving challenge of, how to stand-out among the crowd. As a supplier, Danpal has a potential answer, and we refer to it as Danpatherm. This cassette-based concept gives us the opportunity to use our Danpatherm K7 and Danpatherm K12 based façade solutions, as carriers for advanced LED lighting systems. This trick of lighting is unique in our market, and is what allows the Danpatherm Façade System to ‘stand-out from the crowd’.

Danpatherm Let’s take a step back for a moment, so we can understand what sets the K7 and K12 façade solution, apart from other translucent offerings. The Danpatherm design concept relies on the implementation of fully finished off pre-fabricated cassettes, which are flanked by Danpalon panels covering each face. These double-glazed units are sealed-off against external elements and arrive on-site, sized and ready for installation. Having the finished product arrive on-site, drastically reduces both the man-power and man-hours need for a successful installation.

So we have established that time on site can be reduced, and that the cassettes arrive fully completed, negating the need for additional engineering on site. The next attribute to consider, which is key to our Danpatherm system, is that in our case, double-glazing means that you can remove either the exterior or interior face of the cassette, without compromising the weather line. When considering long-term maintenance issues, this ability will become both ever more important and impressive. Can you imagine the cost implications of needing to have an entire façade removed, and in doing so, compromise the building’s occupants?

Danpatherm

The next more obvious point to cover, is that by using two Danpalon microcell panels, together in a single cassette – we can more than double the U-Value! More than double the u-value, just how is this possible, you might ask? Well, by separating the 2 Danpalon panels with an air-gap, we have essentially trapped a layer of air, as additional insulation. Still not enough, how about using the cassette as a carrier for glass fibre insulation material, and achieving a u-value of 0.52 W/m2 K! A point to remember is that even by adding in the insulation material, we are still able to achieve measurable levels of light transmission.

Now, if it wasn’t enough that a single façade system type, could offer all these attributes, with some of them being completely unique – K7 and K12 can also bring you LED light! To achieve this highly technical feat of engineering, Danpal partnered with LED lighting experts, who together developed a bespoke lighting solution for the Danpatherm cassette module. The solution is comprised of separate IP67 outdoor certified LED units, each with the capability to produce a full spectrum of both colored and white light.

What does this mean for an architect, and what does this mean for their next building project? It means that the architect now has the power to uniquely transform the very face of the building, into a vivid display of light! A display of light that reflects the architect’s intention and that speaks the design language of the building. A perfect example of this technology in use can be seen in use, in the Antel Arena in Uruguay. This multi-purpose indoor sports arena, can cater for up to 15 000 people and lights up the night time sky, with a light display visible from miles around.

Perhaps it is time that we re-think our view on Danpatherm, and in the process, rediscover the magic of LED light displays. To look upon our projects with an eye for, what might be and what can be done, by approaching the design with a ‘child-like’ openness to the ‘impossible’. At Danpal, we have a habit of turning the impossible into reality, by allowing our clients the magic, to design with light. We call this… Light Architecture!

Wall Cladding Keeps A Building Healthy And Free From Mold

When making decisions about a building, selections of style and color often dominate the design process. And yet, one of the most important decisions to be made in the planning stages may not get the attention that it should. How will you protect the insulation in your building so that moisture from rain and snow don’t invade the inside of a structure? This vital decision affects the energy efficiency of a building, the health, and wellbeing of those insides, and even the life span of the structure itself. Making the right decision on wall cladding can avoid the problems that result from damp insulation.

DANPAL’S VENTILATED RAINSCREEN SYSTEM: WALL CLADDING AT ITS BEST

Danpal’s Ventilated Rainscreen System or VRS protects insulation completely. With natural ventilation that’s based upon the built-in air gap, the convective motion behind the panels keeps insulation moisture-free. The wall cladding panels are double-notched and watertight. Made of connector-bound microcell technology, the polycarbonate panels are three times lighter than traditional rainscreen cladding. Our customized panel lengths range from the standard 12.0m to longer, depending on your preference and the design of the building itself. Because the connections can be made directly onto the support, there’s no need to use additional supporting framed structures. VRS is light, it’s solid, and it keeps your building’s insulation dry.

Wall CladdingWALL CLADDING AND BUILDING HEALTH

The condition of the insulation in a building possesses enormous control over a building’s wellbeing. Damp insulation that’s been compromised by moisture caused by rain and snow affects the energy efficiency of a building. If the temperature in the home or workplace isn’t consistent and needs to be constantly adjusted to adapt to the cold or heat outside, your energy may be escaping. This will cause your utility bills to increase because you’re paying for energy that you aren’t using. It also takes its toll on the environment, because wasted energy works against the efforts that we’re all making to reduce our carbon footprint as we strive to alleviate the climate stress that the planet is currently facing.

There’s a human element at risk as well when insulation is no longer dry. Moist, damp insulation is a breeding ground for mold and mold can have a very serious impact on the health of a building’s occupants. If mold is growing in your building, people with respiratory ailments may find that their asthma or allergies are worsening.

Damp insulation is an indication that the building is not free from leaks caused by moisture and a leak that goes undetected can cause actual harm to the building itself; in a worst-case scenario, structural collapse may result from this situation. Wall cladding is a frontline defense system that will keep your building healthy for the people who live and work inside it. It will also keep the building itself healthy by preventing leaks that weaken a structure.

Choose Danpal wall cladding that’s designed to keep insulation dry. Your healthy building will be the result!

Controlite® Skylight Roofing: Comfort, Control, Energy Conservation

Look up! It doesn’t matter whether it’s day or night; there’s still something to see. Can’t see anything but the ceiling? That’s because you don’t have skylight roofing. Danpal skylight roofing systems deliver dynamic possibilities for architectural innovation with buildings that are filled with light in the amounts that are comfortable for the occupants. There are health benefits associated with daylight that are enhanced by skylight roofing, one of which is increased exposure to Vitamin D, that vital nutrient that so many of us are lacking because of insufficient exposure to the sun. Skylight roofing protects a building’s occupants from the harsh elements of weather that need to be kept outside while allowing the beneficial aspects, like daylight, to come in. If you’re looking for a way to make your building healthier for its occupants, why not contact Danpal for more information on skylight roofing? Danpal’s Controlite® skylight roofing optimizes the benefits of daylight while still protecting a building’s interior from the harmful effects of weather.

Controlite® Skylight Roofing: Comfort, Control, Energy ConservationCONTROLITE® SKYLIGHT ROOFING OPTIMIZES DAYLIGHT

Danpal’s half-century of innovation has led to the development of architectural solutions that deliver high-quality performance and exciting possibilities. This intelligent daylighting system features skylight roofing with integrated, rotating louvers that adjust positions throughout the day in order to adapt to the changing amount of daylight. Whether it’s the depth of winter or the height of summer, the system enables control of the intensity of the light to suit your personal preference. Skylight roofing by Danpal makes natural light a partner in the building design. In addition to the optimization of light, this skylight roofing system provides a larger surface area; it’s an energy-efficient, sustainable design, and can withstand harsh weather and extremes of temperature.

DAYLIGHT IN, WEATHER OUT: THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF SKYLIGHT ROOFING

Our interior living and working spaces are meant to be comfortable. Walls and ceilings are part of the barrier that keeps the weather from intruding on us; we’re indoor beings and we couldn’t function properly if we had to work and live out in the open, with no escape from cold weather, high temperatures, rain, snow, wind, and hail. Danpal understands that while we appreciate having more daylight inside, we don’t want all of nature’s seasons to intrude upon us. That’s why Danpal’s skylight roofing is built for durability. We use microcell technology so that our panels can deliver complete, 100% watertight protection from the bitter cold, oppressive heat, and rain and snow that weather brings. With skylight roofing, the weather performance is on display outside, but you’re comfortable inside.

CONTROLITE® AND ENERGY CONSERVATION

In a world that has gone from being agricultural to industrial, buildings play a vital role in the way that energy is consumed. With Controlite® skylight roofing, energy used from heating, air conditioning and artificial lighting is significantly reduced so that a building’s environmental impact is less negative. Danpal Controlite® panels can be integrated into the energy-efficient design of a building, making designers eligible for credit points through the green building rating systems.

Rainscreen Cladding Protects A Building, Inside And Out

A building leads a double life, one on the outside, seen by the public, and the other on the inside. Passersby notice the exterior of a building as the roof and other outside aspects that are in full view. But when it comes to the inside of a building, it’s a little different.

It’s easy for occupants to observe when the carpeting is worn or the floors need to be washed and buffed, but who notices whether or not insulation has been compromised by weather? That hidden life of a building can be a deciding factor determining the structure’s health and wellbeing. That’s why rainscreen cladding, which creates a defensive barrier to keep external weather from penetrating a building’s interior, is an excellent way to give the structure the protection that it needs.

DANPAL’S SUPERIOR RAINSCREEN CLADDING

Weather is a mighty opponent for a building to face. While we notice, on a day-to-day basis, whether we’re dealing with warm weather or cold, we don’t always pay attention to the consequences of the weather forecast.

That’s why Danpal’s Ventilated Rainscreen Cladding SYSTEM (VRS) is regarded as one of the best ways to protect a building’s interior from the external elements that strike with such force. VRS has double-notched panels that prevent rain and snow from penetrating the building; this keeps moisture from getting inside.

In addition, VRS provides natural ventilation thanks to an air gap that keeps insulation free from moisture. Another asset of VRS is the ease of installation; connections can be made right onto the support. No additional structural support is needed. Another time-saving feature is the fact that rainscreen cladding doesn’t require periodic service or even a lot of maintenance.

Rainscreen CladdingUSER FRIENDLY RAINSCREEN CLADDING

In addition to the ease of installation, rainscreen cladding by Danpal offers a versatility that adds to appeal of the product. Rainscreen cladding delights architects because it can be made out of various different materials, including galvanized steel, aluminum, plastic, wood, brick, and imitation stone. Architects don’t like to be confined when designing a structure and that’s why Danpal products are a favorite for the profession.

Why should a building be limited in options? Danpal’s aim is to provide an architect with as many tools as possible, and nothing is more vital than unleashed creativity.

RAINSCREEN CLADDING IS THE HEALTHIER OPTION

Insulation is often ignored by a building’s occupants, and yet it’s key to maintaining a healthy living and working place for occupants.

If moisture invades a building’s interior and the insulation gets damp as a result, it won’t be long before mold develops. Mold thrives in a damp environment and then it spreads. Before long, the occupants of the building, particularly those who may suffer from respiratory ailments, may find their health is affected by their physical environment.

People who already have asthma or allergies are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of mold. Rainscreen cladding doesn’t just protect buildings; it also protects the people inside them by preventing mold from developing.

Danpalon vs Traditional Glazing

The built environment tells a story of human progress, it is the fingerprint of our civilization and an ode to our endeavors. Our collective history is a compilation of discoveries and achievements, most notably in architecture, this progress is clear for all to appreciate. When we consider this, then we understand that it is the architect, who plays the role of the painter and the construction materials are the palette of colors on hand.

It was the dawn of the industrial revolution, which brought on our ability, to produce construction materials such as steel and glass on a large-scale. Fundamentally, this ability altered our skylines forever and evolved our concepts of architecture to this day. With these new production technologies and access to higher-quality uniform materials, architects took their visions to new heights. For the first time, buildings could be designed to embrace the use of natural daylight, as glass became the glazing material of choice.

It’s been 200 years since this revolutionary step forward in our architectural progress, and yet today, in an age of renewed space travel – we still rely so heavily on glass? What happened, why does the building industry still turn to glass as their primary source of glazing, when advanced material technologies, have moved far beyond? This is a question that can be turned on its head, when we consider, what alternatives are there available to us, which can take our architecture forward in the 21st century.

The race to produce advanced building materials that can outperform their traditional counterparts has brought us a variety of light-weight thermoplastic polymers, often adopted within high-tech industries. Pioneered by Bayer, Makrolon is a high-end polycarbonate thermoplastic material, which delivers on the promise for future-proofed glazing. So what exactly is a polycarbonate polymer and why do we believe it to step forward from glass? To delve into this, we must consider the metrics we use to evaluate glass used within the construction industry, in the first place.

For modern glazing to be effective and of useful purpose, the material of choice needs to provide us with the following 11 attributes:

  • Translucency
  • Weatherproof
  • Strength
  • Durability
  • Adaptability
  • Aesthetics
  • Safety
  • Lightweight
  • Thermal Efficiency
  • Solar Performance
  • Green Rating

How does a polycarbonate thermoplastic stack-up against the old glazing standard of glass, when compared along with these attributes? Let’s have a look…

Polycarbonate panels can be extruded, clear as glass or completely opaque and every shade of translucency between.

Polycarbonate panels when provided within a complete façade, roofing or cladding system is a proven weather barrier as tested by ASTM E-331 and ASTM E-283 standards.

A polycarbonate panel, pound for pound, is 200 times stronger than tempered glass, which provides immense resistance to environmental impact.

Durability is a combination of several factors that determine the material’s lifespan, and when polycarbonate is co-extruded with advanced inhibitors, the material will last a building’s lifecycle.

How does a panel adapt to the environment and to the demands of the project? How about the ability to be curved organically and take the shape of the building. Fortunately, polycarbonate polymers achieve this flexibility without compromise.

Polycarbonate panels are offered in a spectrum of color, finishes, profiles, and shapes that are unmatched by any other form of glazing.

Why are polycarbonate thermoplastics used for bullet-proofing solutions, because, of its inherent strength and resistance to shattering? Used for safety glasses, riot gear and in sports equipment, again because polycarbonates are non-flammable and safe.

Even though polycarbonates are inherently much stronger than glass, they are also less than half of the weight of the traditional option.

Thermal efficiency is becoming more important in our modern-day buildings, and when a polycarbonate thermoplastic is extruded into a multicell structured panel, superior U-values below 1.0 Ug (W/m2.K) are achievable.

For a building, keeping the sun at bay translates into lower HVAC costs and a leads directly to a H.Q.E (high-quality environment). When a polycarbonate building panel is co-extruded with a Low-E or reflective finish, SHGC figures below 0.2 are possible.

A green rating is one of the new Gold standards that a 21st-century glazing system must achieve. When compared to glass, the production of polycarbonate panels creates a much smaller carbon footprint. This extends itself right from the factory floor, all the way to transportation and delivery on site.

So we are able to clearly establish that when comparing an advanced polycarbonate thermoplastic panel, directly against its old-world glass counterpart, building material science – has moved us much further ahead. This thermoplastic polymer provides us with a glazing option that is stronger, lighter, more efficient, more durable, has more variety and that is ‘greener’ for the environment. This brings us back to the concept of architects playing the role of a painter, as it becomes obvious that polycarbonates bring to life, a whole new spectrum of vivid colors to our palette.

DANPALON vs TRADITIONAL GLAZING

Celebrate the Uniqueness of Each Individual Building

A Key Element in Presenting Your Architectural Vision

The internationally renowned architect, Diego Garteiz Mina, recently collaborated with Pal Plastic’s, very own Marketing and Sales Manager, Gorka Goikoextea Retana. Together, they attended technical conferences on architecture, organized by Danpal Mexico, and hosted in the Torre Mayor building, Mexico City.

The Vizcayan architect began his speech explaining some of the most relevant projects developed throughout his extensive professional career. In addition, he exemplified with images, his particular vision during the construction process of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The complexity of the project modified his initial concept during the development of architectural design.

DanpalFrom his professional experience, his main idea has always been to represent the uniqueness of each building. He does this via new concepts, such as capturing the simplicity and essence of each space, and integrating the structures with their surroundings. He can then use this as a differentiating element, the effects being produced by the interplay of sunlight on each surface.

Unique Spaces

This is how he came up with the concepts that would later become another of his main projects; the Bullring of Illescas, in Toledo, whose structure stood out at the time as the largest mobile roof in Spain. Another feature that makes this space unique, is the incorporation of elements, usually only found during the production process. Although they may not be functional, they become a differentiating element of design, as observed in images of the bullring in Illescas.

In this concrete architectural project, Diego Garteiz, chose to use the Danpalon® based system, combining it with metallic structures. He managed, not only to create a dynamic exterior effect and color, according to the solar incidence but a special interior transmission created by light at different times of the day.

The solar transmission which characterizes the architectural works of Garteiz, can also be observed in the building of warehouses, constructed in Alaves Lanciego. Here, he incorporated one of the very elements used during the process of winemaking. Other elements are also integrated into the structure of the facade. These materials, combined with the Danpal® system, manage to create a unique effect, both on the outside and inside of each surface, by generating unique light effects.

danpal

Danpal, Trust and Long-Term Guarantee

I have been collaborating with Danpal for over 20 years, a company that has my complete and total confidence. In this sense, Garteiz explained, “We have been working a lot with Danpal products throughout Spain. The material, not only guarantees durability over the passage of time but also, an extreme lightness that encourages speed of construction during assembly on site. In addition to cost savings, the construction of unique structures in which energy efficiency and the transmission of sunlight are spectacular. The definition of spaces created by natural daylight, allow us to achieve unique areas of high quality for everyday use.” – the architect concluded.

Gaining Heat in a Windy City

For a large swimming pool complex, high winds and cool temperatures outside make thermal efficiency targets that little bit harder to attain. Add in the need to maximize the amount of natural light poolside, and achieving required heat gains presents a challenge. Translucent Danpalon® façade systems are providing building designers with an elegant solution.

Pachuca in Central Mexico is a very windy city and by Mexican standards is also quite cold, with an average temperature of 16ºC throughout the year. When Alberca Universidad Politécnica Metropolitana came to rebuild its swimming pool complex the building’s thermal efficiency was a key design criteria.

FACADE SYSTEMAt the same time, the project needed to reuse as much existing infrastructure as was possible. With the swimming pool then largely determining the building’s orientation, façade design played a vital role in maximizing natural light and heat gain on the inside while handling the high winds on the outside.

The architects, Instituto Hidalguense de la Infraestructura Fisica Educativa (INHIFE) also had to face the challenge of building in sandy soil conditions that offered a relatively low weight resistance. With the weight and movement of the swimming pool being a significant part of the structure’s overall loading, the use of lightweight façade materials was vital. Turning to translucent Danpalon® polycarbonate façade systems, the INHIFE architects found an aesthetically pleasing and technically robust solution capable of meeting the project’s competing demands for light diffusion, thermal insulation, physical strength and low material weight.

A full-height Danpalon® façade constructed using 16mm Ice panels runs the complete length of one side of the swimming pool on a steel frame, while a further Danpalon® façade using a combination of 22mm 3DLite metallic grey and red panels sits at one end of the pool.

INHIFE architect Edgar Baca said, “The fantastic level of light diffusion that these two complementary façades achieve creates a truly unique ambience, with high quality daylight for the interior and a wonderful luminosity for the exterior at night.”

He continued, “Danpalon® has added a huge amount of character to the building thanks to the interaction of material, light and surroundings. At no point does it ever look the same. The hue, texture and appearance depends on where it’s viewed from and the weather conditions. It has given the project real life and personality.”

The new swimming pool complex is a unique wedge-like form composed of gentle slopes, elegant curves and striking lines. A heightened façade wall to increase the natural light diffusion and enable optimization of roof span and pitch was aided by the use of extra long Danpalon® panels, which also avoided the need for horizontal jointing. Panel installation was rapid, taking just a few days from delivery to completion.

Baca added, “Considering the enhanced thermal efficiency the new swimming pool building has attained, and the tremendous functionality it is now providing, this is a project that to date has not once caused us to think that any kind of design adjustment was merited – it really is working to perfection.”

Polycarbonate Sheets: Today’s Building Material Choice For Strength and Flexibility

Fifty years as leaders in the building industry with polycarbonate sheets systems have provided Danpal with a reputation for innovation and expertise. We operate on five continents so, in addition to our decades of experience, we have a global presence that enhances our ability to live up to our motto, Global Vision, Local Focus. As the market’s expectations change to include materials that are stronger, lighter, more energy-efficient, and easier to work with, Danpal has been in the forefront of the transformation in the industry. Our reputation as leaders in the manufacturing of building materials has been solidified by our commitment to cutting-edge products that meet customer expectations.

Not all companies have been able to keep up the pace of change that has resulted from technological advances, and not all of the products that were once popular in the industry have been able to maintain their edge. Polycarbonate sheets are one of the new products on the market; they are so strong, flexible and attractive that they are replacing more traditional building materials such as glass.

Polycarbonate Sheets Don’t Surrender To Weather

No matter what weather pattern we’re in, we can be sure that weather will continue to be a force with which to be reckoned. Snow, rain, wind, and hail haven’t changed. Fortunately, technology and efficiency have changed. Polycarbonate panels, which are available in two different forms, are part of the technological innovation that is redefining how buildings are designed and built. You may choose multiwall polycarbonate panels, which is a structured sheet with hollow air chambers, or solid polycarbonate, which is a clear, flat sheeting that resembles glass in looks but is much stronger and lighter.

polycarbonate sheetsPolycarbonate Sheets Are Flexible

If a product is lightweight and easy to work with, as polycarbonate plastic sheets are, it’s going to be popular with architects and clients. That’s because installation is going to be smoother as well, causing less disruption for the client and the workplace. When time is saved, money is saved. The flexibility of polycarbonate sheets has already won over clients who manufacture farming machinery, windshields, security screens, and moving machinery parts. Polycarbonate sheets actually bend, making them so much more versatile than glass. If you have an arching roof, a larger polycarbonate sheet is particularly well suited. The larger the size of the sheet, the greater is the bend’s radius. Read all about the advantages of polycarbonate roofing sheets.

Polycarbonate is hardened so that its strength is 200 times that of glass but only half as heavy. And yet, polycarbonate sheets are virtually unbreakable. It’s plain to see why architects choose polycarbonate sheets to work with.

The Danpal Ventilated Rain System (VRS) Uses Polycarbonate Panels

Danpal’s Ventilated Rain System’s polycarbonate sheets keep insulation dry thanks to the air gap that provides natural ventilation. Keeping insulation dry is a vital consideration in the life span of a building because once insulation is compromised, so is the building, even if problems don’t show up immediately.

By using clear polycarbonate sheets or any other polycarbonate sheet color, you’re giving your building all the protection that it needs in order to be able to fight off weather and prevent moisture from penetrating. You’re benefitting as well, because polycarbonate is one of the most popular materials in the industry.

Polycarbonate Sheets are Today’s Choice in Building Materials

If a company is going to make its mark in the competitive building industry, it must be innovative. The changes that technology has made in the twenty-first century have altered virtually every aspect of our life, and that’s as true in the building industry as it has been in other areas. Danpal, with its 50 years as a leader in developing building materials that are designed to meet both the immediate needs of the client as well as the broader needs of a sustainable world, knows how to deliver satisfaction on a multitude of levels. First, never skimp on quality. The customer must be confident that the products used in a building are superior so that they will perform their function to the utmost. Second, the products must be able to do their job. In order to last, a building must maintain its strength and integrity. Third, a product must support the energy efficiency standards that are cost-effective for the consumer and environmentally friendly for the planet. And last, but not least, a product that is part of the visual appearance of a building should enhance its esthetics. We’re proud to say that polycarbonate sheets meet all of these requirements.

Polycarbonate SheetsPolycarbonate Sheets Deliver Superior Strength

Innovation and advances and technology mean that building materials that were popular in a previous generation are no longer capable of matching today’s products. Polycarbonate sheets are half as heavy as glass, but 200 times stronger. In addition, polycarbonate sheets are more flexible than glass. You can see the advantages of this trait; flexibility means that polycarbonate sheets are easier to install and customize.

If a building’s components are functioning as they were designed, energy efficiency is assured. When insulation remains dry, energy isn’t going to waste. Your building is using just the amount that’s needed to keep the inside comfortable and free from moisture. That represents a financial savings for you, a structural savings for your building, and an environmental savings for our world.

Whether you choose multiwall polycarbonate, which is a structured sheet made of hollow air chambers, or solid polycarbonate, which is clear, flat sheeting that resembles glass in appearance, you’re choosing a product that offers superior performance. Both multiwall and solid polycarbonate are equal in performance, so in the end, you’re going to choose the polycarbonate that suits the appearance you’re looking for.

Speaking of Appearance . . .

Earlier, we told you that appearance is an important component of the Danpal products that are visible. We’re known for the way that we’ve incorporated light into the architecture of a building, and polycarbonate sheets are included in the Danpal daylight options. We can’t take credit for using daylight as a building material, but we can take credit for creating systems and products that make it easier to include natural light as part of the interior design of a building. With the natural light that comes from Mother Nature, and the color options that Danpal provides, buildings don’t just offer a structural presence; they provide a creative one as well.

Polycarbonate Sheets for Superior Performance

People aren’t always aware of how much the construction industry has changed in the last 50 years but at Danpal, we’ve had the opportunity to be part of an exciting and innovative trend that has transformed the buildings in which we work and live. No innovation has been more dynamic than the arrival of polycarbonate, a material that offers superior strength and resistance to weather, yet is flexible and easy to work with. In order for a building to perform an optimum level, it needs to be weather resistant, well-insulated, and esthetically pleasing. If you haven’t considered polycarbonate sheets for your next building project, we’re happy to make the introduction!

Meet Polycarbonate Sheets, multiwall polycarbonate, and solid polycarbonate

Polycarbonate sheets are available in two different forms. There’s multiwall polycarbonate, a structured sheet with hollow air chambers; and solid polycarbonate, a clear, flat sheeting that looks like glass.  There’s no difference in the quality of either version. Each has its own distinct advantage, so the final decision on which one to choose depends on your project and its esthetics. We should alert you, however, that if you’re a fan of glass, you need to know that polycarbonate has advantages that traditional glass can’t duplicate. But more on that later!

What Can Polycarbonate Sheets Do That Other Building Materials Can’t Do?

It’s not just what polycarbonate can do, it’s how well it can do it. Polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable, yet that phenomenal strength doesn’t get in the way of flexibility which makes it so easy to work with and customize for personal tastes.
Polycarbonate, which is 200 times stronger than glass, is a material that has been hardened to withstand high levels of resistance. Glass doesn’t have the same nimble ability to adapt to conditions and protect a structure in the same way that polycarbonate sheets can. Both glass and plastic paneling are susceptible to scratching. It’s true that if a piece of glass is scratched, the scratch isn’t readily visible to the human eye. But polycarbonate strength makes it much harder to crack or break.

If you’re wondering what difference flexibility makes, consider this: Polycarbonate sheets are used in security screens, moving machinery parts, farming machinery, and windshields, all items that need to be sturdy, but also need to be flexible.

The Polycarbonate Sheet Advantage Shows in the Danpal Ventilated Rainscreen System

We’re not going to say that weather has met its match in polycarbonate sheets, because Mother Nature likes to run the show. But what we can say is that the polycarbonate sheets in our ventilated rainscreen system do a spectacular job of insulating the interior of a building from the damage that harmful weather can cause. A weather –resistant exterior combined with an air gap that allows for natural ventilation keeps insulation dry and effective. When you’re paying your heating bills, you’ll be glad to know that Danpal is looking out for you. Did you know that 40% of primary energy consumption is from buildings? Now you understand why Danpal pays so much attention to protecting a building’s insulation. You can trust your next project to polycarbonate sheets.

Skylight Roofing that Suits Your Personal Taste

The more light the better! That’s how most of us feel and Danpal is in complete agreement on that point. That’s why the company, which has been in the business of building for 50 years, has devoted considerable research into developing skylight roofing that satisfies the customer, withstands weather, and maintains environmental sustainability. Danpal’s dry-glaze, translucent systems are available in different designs to suit the dimensions of your building as well as your own personal tastes. The Danpavault Barrel Vault Skylight System is the ultimate in skylight roofing, delivering the perfect balance of light that works best in the workplace and living spaces.

Danpal Skylight Roofing: The Best that Technology Offers

Skylight RoofingBecause Danpal skylight roofing has to be light enough to be flexible but strong enough to handle different weather conditions, the product is naturally versatile. The system’s Microcell technology is what delivers the resistance to weather damage; it’s even resistant to the impact of hail! It’s compatible with all roofing types, so whether skylight roof is intended for metal or concrete, it’s going to be easy to install. Danpal roofing can be customized to suit your preference, so it comes in a wide range of sizes and lengths, another feature that makes installation easier. Another popular feature is the way that the panels slot onto place. With the Danpavault Barrel Vault Skylight System’s ability to e beither self-supporting or placed over a metal structure with aluminum framing options, installation over varyingly sized spans is no problem.

Skylight Roofing and Weather

Weather and the forces of nature are a building’s natural enemy. But with the 100% watertight security of Danpal skylight roofing, buildings stay dry inside because rain and snow aren’t able to penetrate the exterior. The Danpavault System’s extended UV protection and thermal insulation save money for the customer by increasing the life span of the building because it has extra protection. The security of the panels also assures those inside that energy isn’t escaping from within.

Skylight Roofing and Appearance

Danpal knows that when a customer decides to install skylight roofing, the beauty of its appearance is a major reason for the decision. And why not? Who doesn’t like the advantages that natural light brings to the internal environment? Not only does skylight roofing bring the daylight indoors, but it creates an atmosphere of wellness that artificial lighting just can’t duplicate. The tight spacing between the ribs of the panels partners with the light for a look that’s as beautiful as it is comfortable. If you thought glass was transparent, wait until you see the skylight roofing panels, which, in addition to transparency, give you light and flexibility that glass can’t match.

Glass also can’t offer the range of colors that Danpal offers in its skylight roofing. Some people like the subtlety of shades of white, others prefer metallic or bold colors. Your roof will reflect your own preference and the result will be a building that’s unique, energy efficient, and durable. You’ll be very pleased with the results!

Polycarbonate Panels Are Today’s Choice in Building Material

The Danpal Difference in Building Quality

Fifty years is a long time for any company to remain a leader in its field. But for Danpal, the ability to maintain a cutting-edge reputation in the building industry reflects a tireless commitment to research, a profound respect for the needs of our customers, and an awareness of the manner in which the products that we manufacture and sell affect our environment. We must be doing something right because with a half-century of experience in delivering customer satisfaction over five continents, we’ve been able to stay at the head of the pack. One of the ways that we’ve stayed in the lead is by making use of innovative materials like polycarbonate panels, which are redefining the way buildings are designed.

Polycarbonate Panels are Stronger

Stronger than what, you ask? Well, polycarbonate panels are 200 times stronger than glass. But they’re only half as heavy! What this means is that when you choose to use polycarbonate panels for your design, you’re selecting a material that delivers more than glass but isn’t as cumbersome to work with. Because of its phenomenal strength, as well as its flexibility, polycarbonate is the panel of choice in guard materials used to move machinery parts, for farming machinery, windshields, and security screens.

Polycarbonate PanelsTypes of Polycarbonate Panels

Polycarbonate comes in two forms. There’s multiwall polycarbonate, a structured sheet with hollow air chambers; and solid polycarbonate, a flat, clear sheeting that looks like glass. Because both forms are popular as well as functionally superior, the final choice may depend on the visual appearance that is sought.

Polycarbonate Panels are Energy Efficient

Our modern world knows that the buildings that are constructed today have the potential to do great harm if they’re not made of materials that are environmentally friendly. But for customers, the product must still deliver in performance. You’ll love the energy efficiency that polycarbonate delivers: the panels in a ventilated rain system employ a special function that keeps the insulation dry and functioning to maximum effectiveness. That’s because of the gap in the system which provides natural ventilation. Dry insulation is insulation that can do its job without impediment. The panels last longer and the building benefits from the protection against damage.

Polycarbonate isn’t just energy efficient, it’s efficient, period! Light of weight and easy to install, the product is a favorite with architects and their clients because of the flexibility it offers. Less time to install means lower costs and less time needed for the job, a result that pleases everyone.

Polycarbonate is Daylight’s Partner

Danpal has become renowned for the remarkable way in which its products enhance the use of natural light. Polycarbonate is part of this daylight delivery service, especially as architects have fallen in love with its capabilities. An architect who recognizes the superior versatility of polycarbonate is one who knows how to match the prowess of the products he or she uses with the power of creativity. And with plenty of colors to choose from, you’ll be amazed at the options that are yours when you choose polycarbonate panels.

Your Skylight Roof Lets the Sunshine in

Light is what a skylight is all about and Danpal understands that a skylight roof adds so much to the appeal of a home or building. A skylight roof is a wonderful way to invite the daylight inside a structure so that everyone benefits from the way natural light makes us feel. Some people hesitate when deciding whether or not to add a skylight roof because they worry about its ability to withstand adverse weather. But rest assured that a Danpal skylight roof is designed with durability in mind, something for which our company, which has been creating and installing innovative roofing systems for the last 50 years, can be counted on. Built to last, built to perform, that’s what Danpal products add to construction.

Danpavault Barrel Vault Skylight Systems

At Danpal, we’re proud of the way we’ve been able to engineer a skylight roof that is compatible with all kinds of roofing, including profiled metal or concrete. Our Danpavault Barrel Vault Skylight System combine Danpal’s decades of roofing expertise with easy integration, UV protection and a seamless, even diffusion of natural light that delivers optimum insulation for your building.

Skylight RoofSkylight Roofs Deliver the Sun and Strength

A skylight roof is the architectural way to have the best of both worlds: the comfort of the inside with the natural illumination from outside. There are economic benefits to this blend as well; Danpal skylight roofs offer both thermal and solar comfort, and they do so without cutting corners on structural endurance. Danpal skylight roofs are made with microcell technology to enhance their ability to withstand damage from rough weather, even from hail. Thanks to a 100% watertight composition, rain isn’t going to compromise the integrity of your skylight roof. The rain can’t get inside. Knowing that your skylight roof provides the ultimate in protection from the rough weather conditions makes it easier for you to enjoy the wonderful abundance of natural light that a skylight roof gives you. Imagine spending quality time in a building that invites just the right amount of illumination, under the most ideal of conditions, into your day. In addition, the skylight roof delivers extended UV protection for added defense from the powerful rays of the sun. That’s what the Danpavault system promises.

Skylight Roofs Bring Versatility

If you’re skeptical about a skylight roof and you think it might make the construction process too complicated, think again. Our Danpavault Barrel Vault Skylight Roof System is tailored for versatility. Because our panels come in unlimited lengths, they’re easily integrated into position. The flexibility of the panels makes them easy to install without needing extra effort or labor. The versatility of Danpal engineering connects the unbounded creativity of the architect with the built-in flexibility of the product. Not needing extra effort or work to make the perfect building is liberating for an architect, allowing him to focus on what the building will look like at completion rather than on what reductions he needs to make in order to meet a budget. Budgets love Danpal products because so much more is offered for the money.

Curtain Wall Systems Provide Protection and Individuality for Your Building

What You Need to Know About Curtain Wall Systems

Danpal’s reputation has been so firmly established on the strength of our structural products that some people might not realize that we also produce curtain wall systems, which although not structural, have a lot to do with keeping your building in good condition. Like our other Danpal products, curtain wall systems have both a protective and an esthetic purpose. That’s because curtain wall systems are placed over your building exterior for that added layer of protection against weather damage. Installing a curtain wall system is a good idea, and we’ll tell you why.

Curtain Wall SystemsCurtain Wall Systems: A Building’s First Line of Defense

In order for a building to last, it has to be able to withstand the damaging effects of weather, which, day by day, inflicts heat, rain, wind, and snow upon the structure. When designing a building, architects pay a lot of attention to the best products that offer the most protection against the outdoor elements. We’re very proud to say that Danpal, because our curtain wall systems utilize microcell technology for its extremely high impact resistance, consistently comes out at the top of the list for delivering the protection that buildings need. So, while you’re inside, don’t worry when the rain pours, the wind howls, the snow falls, and the hail strikes, because your building is protected.

Installing Curtain Wall Systems for Added Security

Danpal’s curtain wall systems come with a double click locking seam, so that everything is secure and capable of handling a high-load resistance. It’s a simple but effective process that not only ensures the security of the curtain wall system, but also makes installations much quicker and much less cumbersome.

Lightweight Materials Make Curtain Wall Systems Easy to Work With

Danpal engineering has developed a material that is lightweight, flexible, and strong. The lightweight aspect of the curtain wall systems makes it easy to transport and work with, making the building process easier for everyone. The strength of the system is an inherent feature of Danpal products. Because the joints are concealed, the exterior remains flush so that it can be shaped to conform to the design.

Danpal Curtain Wall Systems Deliver Versatility of Appearance

Customization takes on an entirely new level of personalization when we’re talking about Danpal curtain wall systems. That’s because we offer so many different color options, along with finishes and special effects, that your curtain wall system will create exactly the image that you have in mind. The nature of construction requires a building to conform to certain codes, specifications and functions, but when it comes to color, the only limitation is your own imagination. We have options to keep it simple, if that’s what you prefer. Or, if your building design is intended to reflect a certain attitude, color is a wonderful way to be noticed. At Danpal, we regard color choices as an adventure. We have soothing, muted shades that will easily blend into the location of your building, along with bright, bold colors that will get noticed. We’ll work with whatever choice you make so that, in the end, the building communicates through its appearance and we want to help you deliver your message.

Polycarbonate Panels by Danpal – 50 years of innovation

At Danpal®, we’ve spent 50 years perfecting walls, and we’ve found a formula for doing it that combines energy efficiency, environmental safety, financial feasibility and esthetic appeal, all key components for any client assessing the best building model. A relatively new innovation in the building market is the development of polycarbonate panels, which are now replacing traditional building materials.

In the past, polycarbonate panels cost too much and weren’t very energy efficient. Not much of a bargain, right? Fortunately, that has changed, making the polycarbonate panels a tremendously popular arrival in the building community. In the old days, builders relied upon toughened glass and polyethylene membrane. But polycarbonate panels are a perfect blend of high-impact strength, frame resistance, UV protection, light transmission, and anti-drop. All that, and beautiful too!

Polycarbonate PanelsWhy Polycarbonate Panels are So Popular?

Half as heavy as glass but just as translucent, clear polycarbonate is much easier to transport and to install. According to studies, the strength of polycarbonate sheeting and paneling is approximately 200 times that of standard glass, and up to 20 times the strength of tempered glass. Is it any wonder that polycarbonate panels have become the preferred option for buildings that face significant exposure to the toughest conditions that weather can dish out?

How Danpal® Uses Polycarbonate Panels?

Polycarbonate panels thrive in the Danpal® setting because we have top-of-the-line systems that use the panels to optimum effect. Check out our specially designed rainscreen system that preserves the integrity of the insulation for a long time because it’s entirely, reliably, waterproof. Architects love polycarbonate panels because their flexibility means that they can be used in so many different forms. Professionals in the building field can devise innovative, highly functional designs that transform the structures they’re creating.. It’s easy to cut, for one thing, which saves effort. Anything that saves effort ends up saving on cost as well.

Your energy bills already tell you how important it is to keep the costs down. Well, polycarbonate panels are high-quality insulators, something that means a lot both in terms of budgets and also the environment. In a world where carbon footprints take up a lot of space, everyone is going for a trim tread on the planet.

How Polycarbonate Panels Work with Ventilation?

When you think about it, it’s really obvious. The Danpal® sysem actually protects the insulation from the external threats by capitalizing on the natural ventilation in the façade that results from the air gap. Behind the panels, there’s a constant convective motion going on. That keeps the insulation dry and efficient, even as time goes on.

Lookin’ Good with Danpalon® Panels

We tend to focus on the efficiency and cost-savings features of our panels, but we can’t ignore the beauty that they create. That beauty comes in a lot of options. With our company’s translucent range, the appearance of the building alters with the light and the reflections that project onto the façade at different times during the day. If you have bright colors accompanied by a metallic, lacquered look, you’ll want to choose the opaque panels that are available in an amazing range of tints. With our bicolor option, you can adapt your facades to the desired effect, inside and out. You choose the colors you want, and we make it happen.

Wall cladding and VRS system by Danpal

Wall cladding is the best solution for builders and individuals who want to ensure their property remains in good condition. Many homes and offices are built with cladding these days because it offers countless benefits to the owners. In this article, we will discuss some of the advantages and try to explain the VRS system.

Wall claddingWe hope this information will encourage more people to try our products this year. At the end of the day, if people plan to build a new construct or replace cladding, they need to choose a premium solution.

  • Protection from damp and extreme weather

Adverse weather conditions can damage a property and create the need for expensive repairs. However, our VRS ventilated system can stop that from happening. The cladding sits on the outside of the building and helps to protect the wood or brickwork. It offers ventilation that contributes towards guaranteeing mold doesn’t begin to form. It also provides a barrier between the weather and the house. Our products can withstand the extremes of heat and cold, and they last for many years. Making an investment now could mean property owners and development companies save a fortune in the future.

  • A lightweight and environmentally-friendly solution

Our wall cladding is lightweight, and its use doesn’t harm the environment. That is a big advantage for people who are concerned about their impact on the planet. Indeed, there is no waste at all, and so cladding is better than alternative solutions. Some people choose to tile in the hope of encouraging the same benefits. However, that is the wrong choice because tiles break and require constant replacements. Their production could also cause environmental issues. So, conscientious property owners will always select our VRS system.

  • Fast and easy installation

It’s possible to install wall cladding on an entire property in a matter of days. The product can last for many years, and so owners won’t have to repeat the process for a long time. While it’s an easy procedure, people should always employ the assistance of professionals. It’s a cost-effective job that will pay for itself in no time. On top of that, all our panels come with an unparalleled choice of colors and designs. So, there is something for everyone, regardless of their tastes or requirements. Danpal® VRS is made of connector-bound Microcell polycarbonate panels. They are three times lighter than the traditional rainscreen cladding.

For more than thirty years, we developed state of the art light and thermal systems for architecture. Our team has a broad range of knowledge and expertise. That is why Danpal® has become market leader in this industry. No job is too big, and no job is too small. Clients just have to get in touch to discuss their requirements. Our specialists will then offer advice and recommendations. We’ll also talk clients through each step of the purchasing and installation process. Our firm operates out of five different continents, and we have great global distribution channels.

  • Cold bending of panels on-site: Unlike a lot of other roofing systems, the panels can be bent on-site without the introduction of heat. This allows you to bend and manoeuvre each panel to your own design based on the structure you’re building.

Danpal’s roofing system is a work of architectural art. It allows you to provide a building or structure with a lightweight roof that works in all weather conditions, lasts much longer than traditional glass roofs, and has exceptional thermal and UV performance.

We pride ourself on being able to create phenomenal architectural systems that are perfect for transforming light into a powerful tool. Our systems provide architects with the tools to create environments that harness the power of natural daylight. Danpal operates all over the world and has been in operation for over three decades. Innovation is key, and every Danpal system is built to push boundaries and open opportunities for architects and interior designers throughout the globe.

The power of rainscreen cladding

Our ventilated rainscreen cladding system allows you to achieve an appealing looking exterior to your structure while still achieving some great performance benefits.

In this day and age, there are a lot of regulations that need to be met for new and existing structures. This could be related to the environmental aspects to a building or just your standard building requirements.

rainscreen claddingThis is why it is much easier utilizing an integrated system that combines all of your needs into one thing, rather than trying to piece different aspects of regulations together from multiple sources.

These days it has been shown that approximately 40% of the energy consumption that is primarily consumed in developed countries is from buildings. This means that there is a requirement for buildings to do everything they can to minimize the negative outputs they have on the environment.

The key way in which this can be achieved through rainscreen cladding is by utilizing a system that has a high level of thermal insulation, like our VRS system.

Our rainscreen cladding is based on a process of natural ventilation thanks to an air gap that is designed into our VRS system. This allows there to be a constant connective motion permeating behind the panels. This allows the insulation to stay dry and keep its performance benefits at an optimal level long into the future.

This is thanks to the Danpalon panel that is being used. This system is also nice and lightweight, so you will have no trouble having it installed. Having said this, it is still extremely solid and has a high impact on resistance as it is made up of polycarbonate panels which are bound by connector made out of microcell technology.

This is why we can prove our system is three times lighter than rainscreen cladding without compromising on any of the performance aspects of the system.

As the system does not need any form of additional framing structures when installing it, you can save a lot of time, energy and costs by making the connections directly on the support.

If you are concerned about adverse weather conditions negatively affecting your structure’s integrity, thanks to the double notching found in our VRS panels, there is going to be a perfect level of water tightness in the structure.

Finally, the icing on the cake is all of the different creative features you can add into the system to make it as visually appealing as you like, depending on your tastes and preferences.

How are polycarbonate panels so much stronger than other alternatives?

The market for polycarbonate and polycarbonate panels has developed in recent years. Largely down to the fact that people are looking for more environmentally friendly and energy efficient materials to be used on their structures.

If people solely wanted to protect the environment, but the panels were expensive and not energy efficient, these polycarbonate panels would be nowhere near as popular as they are today.

polycarbonate panels All across the world polycarbonate has been replacing the traditional building materials like toughened glass and polyethylene membrane across a wide variety of industries. This is largely down to the fact that they strike the best balance between high impact strength, being lightweight, frame resistance, anti-drop, light transmission and UV protection, all while still looking great from an aesthetic perspective.

Clear polycarbonate is just as translucent as glass, but it is only half the weight which makes it a whole lot easier to transport and to install. Test studies have shown that polycarbonate sheeting and panelling strength is approximately 200 times that of your usual glass and up to 20 times of tempering glass. This is why they are such a great solution for structures that are exposed to a lot of tough weather conditions like storm rain and strong winds.

At Danpal, we have created a top of the line translucent façade system utilising polycarbonate panels to great effect. We have a specially designed rain screen system that is completely waterproof, which helps to preserve the integrity of a surface long into the future.

As polycarbonate is so easy to cut and you have the flexibility to utilise it in many different forms, more and more architects are using it to come up with innovative and highly functional designs for the structures they are working on.

The main area of benefit for many people is that they are top quality insulators. In this day and age, buildings make up about 40% of the primary energy consumption for most developed nations. This is why insulation is so important in terms of managing energy costs.

Our system protects the insulation from external forces thanks largely to the natural ventilation in the facade as a result of the air gap. This means that there is a constant convective motion occurring behind these panels, which keeps the insulation nice and dry, as well as efficient in the long run.

What does the future hold for polycarbonate panels?

In the past few years, polycarbonate panels have transformed the construction industry. This is thanks to the wide range of features that they brought to the table including ease of installation, energy efficiency and increased design options.

This has made the lives of developers and architects a whole lot easier, as there are more choices to choose from and the overall finish of the structure is closer to what was idealized. While polycarbonate panels may initially be a bit more than the traditional materials that were used when constructing the facade of a building, in the long term they are going to save you money.

polycarbonate panelsThis is why the use of these panels is going to grow and grow into the future. We are moving into a time where energy efficient materials are going to trump everything. Energy costs are set to rise into the future, so having a structure that is as energy efficient as possible is going to be a top priority of all developers and hence designers. This will save you money in the form of energy costs into the future.

With climate change becoming more of an issue, more extreme weather conditions will very likely be experienced across the globe. This means that structures may not be ready to withstand the effects that these conditions will have on them.

Excess rain and wind can cause damage to the facade if subpar materials are used, leading to leaks, structural damage as well as a whole host of other issues. Polycarbonate panels can be easily installed onto a structure, so they are a quick yet effective solution to changing climates. They are resistant to extreme weather conditions and you will not have to be spending heaps of money repairing them.

Currently China is the biggest market when it comes to polycarbonate and this looks set to grow even further into the future. As the Chinese economy develops, more complex designs will be implemented on structures as there will be more money to throw at the construction of buildings, rather than only worrying about the cost of them. This is a trend that will exist throughout the Asia-Pacific region, especially as the wealth of the population increases.

Our range of polycarbonate panels at Danpal have been carefully designed and are constantly being tweaked in order to stay up to date with the latest trends and research. You can’t go wrong with using our products to ensure energy efficiency in your structure.

How can translucent facades improve further into the future?

One of the biggest developments in the world of facades in recent years has been the sustained implementation of top quality translucent facade systems.

Translucent facades combine a number of great qualities to always leave you with a top quality end product. You have a lot of flexibility in design thanks to the flexibility of the polycarbonate that is used in the construction of them. The joints are concealed and the visual appearance is appealing. It is very durable against external stimuli like poor weather conditions and it is energy efficient thanks to special Microcell technology and structural design that has been implemented.

However at Danpal we are always trying to push the boundaries and improve on existing products, as well as constantly innovating with new products.

translucent facadeThere is still room for growth when it comes to the translucent facades. Research is constantly being undertaken on ways in which even thinner panels can be achieved without compromising on any of the qualities that make this product so great.

To get even more transparency, there needs to be no secondary supporting frames whatsoever. This leads to complex mathematics and calculations that have to be done to ensure that the integrity of the building is not compromised simply for aesthetic reasons.

There is now an arms race when it comes to the energy efficiency of a structure. In the past, the carbon emissions and energy costs of a structure were not really thought about at all during the design process, but these days it is one of the first things on the agenda.

Each designer, manufacturer of building materials and developers are trying to have an end structure that is as energy efficient as possible. While our translucent facade system at Danpal has great thermal regulation and insulation effects, there is more room for improvement.

While we can cut energy costs when using our products, until energy cost reach zero, then there will always be room for improvement and innovation.

By experimenting with different materials, structural changes and designs, the energy efficiency of the translucent facades will continually get lower and lower.

Another area that will be massive for translucent facades is the use of them for advertising. These surfaces will very likely be able to be programmed and changed in terms of imagery and advertisements are played on them externally by the owner of the structure.

It is certainly an exciting time for the industry.

What does the future hold for roofing materials?

In the last few decades, the types of roofing materials chosen by designers and architects for different projects have changed drastically. As technology has now become so far advanced, there are many more options available to choose from. These include materials like polycarbonate, as well as your more traditional options.

The other big change was the shift in focus towards more energy efficient options to minimize the carbon footprint that is extracted from Mother Nature. Developers want to have environmentally friendly materials, as well as saving money on energy costs in the long run.

Roof insulation has seen its R values almost triple in the last couple of decades and this looks set to continue into the future. With advanced VOC regulations being enacted, there are a lot stricter rules when it comes to coatings, sealants and adhesives that are being used.

roofing materialsOne of the big buzzwords in today’s world is “The Internet of Things.” It seems logical that this phenomenon will move its way to the rooftop, making it a lot easier and effective when integrating rooftop energy into the energy system of the structure as a whole. This means that the roofing materials themselves will play a larger role in how efficient the transfer of thermal energy may be.

Roofs will also become even more durable and resilient. As weather is becoming more volatile and stronger weather conditions have been hitting many buildings, something that has been put down in large part to climate change, there is a growing demand for more resilient roofs. This could mean being more resistant to fires, winds, hail and other adverse conditions. Roof ratings are set to explode even further in the coming years.

Finally, the removal of roofs will become very important, as people will start wanting to reuse these roofing materials when putting on the new roof. This is more environmentally friendly, as well as cost effective if it can be done in the correct manner.

At Danpal, we are always on the cutting edge of new developments and are constantly tweaking and improving existing products to meet with these growing demands. We pride ourselves on having a roofing system that is aesthetically pleasing, as well as being fundamentally sound and energy efficient. Daylight is maximised in the winter, while solar heat will be blocked in the summer, making it a win-win.

How retrofit facade systems can help your ailing structures

In the past, there were a lot of shoddily constructed buildings erected that used poor materials. A lot of the times these materials were sub optimal for the type of structure they were being used on or the region in which it was situated. This would lead to a host of problems down the line, such as dampness, loss of heat, structural stresses and even collapse in extreme cases.

The ability to retrofit certain facade systems has been seen as somewhat of a game changer, as they can be a measure taken which will extend the longevity of a structure before major work has to be completed on it. Danpal has a number of top quality facade systems that are flexible enough that they can be used in this way.

Energy performance is a massive thing these days, both in terms of helping the environment and having people being able to save on their energy costs. If you have one of these poorly built homes or buildings, the heat will be sucked out of the walls and you will have to use tons of expensive heating to get the building somewhat warm.

facade systemsBy having a proper facade system in place, you can benefit from their natural thermal effect, which will create a layer of protection around the structure. This means that cold air will not be able to permeate internally, while internal heating or air conditioning will be able to be retained in an optimal manner inside of the structure. You are getting the best of both worlds.

These retrofit systems will work better in cooler climates than warmer ones, as there are more benefits to be reaped. If you are concerned with the state of one of your structures, this could very well be the most cost effective and efficient route for you.

There are two main types of facade systems that are commonly used today. The more conventional facade systems will be brick cavity walls, rainscreen facade, rainscreen facade that has terracotta cladding, conventional curtain walls and glass fiber reinforced rainscreen facades to name a few.

The other main type is thermally improved and optimised, such as those seen with Danpal. These will be rainscreen facades that have thermal spaces built into them, those that have thermal isolators and curtain walls that have framing which is thermally broken.

The more advanced building facades will have to consider significant deflections and concentrated forces. By knowing and being aware of these structural behaviours, you can better aid the design of the structure as a whole. This also allows you to choose a facade system that is optimal for the case at hand.

By intertwining all of the different variables and factors, you will be able to have an end product that will be aesthetically pleasing while yield results that are efficient and coordinated with one another.

Why Danpal’s Polycarbonate Panels Are the Premier Choice for So Many Architects

There are so many different suppliers of polycarbonate panels around, which makes it hard to narrow down your selection, especially if you are not sure what you to look for.

You want to ensure that the polycarbonate panels been melted at the correct temperature. Depending on the manufacturer, different additives will be use to give it specific properties.

The first thing you should do is list all of your requirements for what you want to achieve with the panels. This includes your budget, functional features – you need and the right aesthetic look for your structure. This is a quick way to narrow down your options.

You will then need to do your research and look both online and in local stores, as well as getting recommendations of trusted peers.

It’s really important to choose a supplier that has put the product through a rigorous quality assurance tests, and holds International standards certificates, such as ISO 9001.

A monumental works that brings the best together

To build a football stadium with a design with forms in the vanguard, allowing for the comfort of its occupants in a safe and sustainable manner, with the best materials, while incorporating the newest in technology for the television broadcasting of matches, is a real architectural challenge.

For Juan Andrés Vergara and Luis Fernández de Ortega, of the VFO Arquitectos office, experienced in this type of monumental building, the BBVA Bancomer Monterrey stadium is their latest achievement in sports architecture.

In a joint venture with the international firm Populous (formerly HOK Sports) and other companies and national and international institutions, they started the design of this project in 2007 with the idea of building a new stadium for the Rayados team and to create a landmark building for the “regiomontana” city, as Monterrey is known.

“The site is right next to the slopes of the Cerro de la Silla, the most important icon of the northern region of the country. We proposed that the stadium roof have an inclination to the south and that a big window open it to the mountain. This way, you’re joining the functional part with the aesthetic and thematic parts, anchoring to its site, so that for people going to a football game, the first thing they’ll say is ‘we are in Monterrey, we are in our stadium, this is our team and we will win’ “, says Juan Andrés Vergara, CEO.

VFO uses in its projects technology that allow them to create more advanced and complex forms, representing major challenges in terms of construction.

“We wanted that this building be a very radical change in the quality of design in Mexico, so that the materials had to stand up to various situations. Due to the origins of the stadium’s company owner, we thought of metal pots and pans; these curved shapes could be achieved with metallic materials while achieving a brightness that reflected the sun, the colors of the vegetation and the hill”, adds Andrés.

The metal structure surrounds the stadium, leaving spaces for air to enter and cool the public in a natural way, and continues over the stands with an overhang of up to 50 meters. To build it, they used Building Information Modeling, BIM, a modeling technology which allows for design the structure and allowing to know exactly the materials, locations and virtually exact amounts needed for construction.

danpalon The last twelve meters of this overhang are covered by a special polycarbonate material, called Danpalon System, which allows a visual transition between parts in light and those in shadow. “It is an extremely important effect because this way people do not strain their vision as the transition is smooth, and the television cameras also benefit as well”.

This material, in the opinion of Andrés Vergara, offers “great resistance and also the level of translucency we need to apply it with this function. It is very easy to install and contributes to protect the environment”. This is the only polycarbonate in Mexico that can guarantee quality and durability over 25 years and more, which is the best choice for this kind of works that represent a large investment and that must maintain their functionality for several decades.

“When choosing materials, we always say that when an investment of 200 million dollars or more is on the line, one cannot give it to someone who is not experienced; we like to experiment, but safely, we like to bet when we’re going to win. And we know we will win because we have all the tools to make things succeed, the limit is always the imagination, but that imagination has to go with a knowledge of which things are achievable and that is what we apply”, asserts Vergara.

In this regard, Luis Fernandez de Ortega adds: “We seek materials that we know will have the expected performance in a particular building, not delude ourselves with the issue of cost. We rely more on an already proven track record and that is why we put our trust in products we are confident will meet those expectations. One thing I always tell our team when they are doing their job, ‘keep in mind that not only you are putting your name on this, we all are, when you place your name out in front it means you’re putting forward a reputation, that forces us to be very careful with the selection of materials and systems, which is why we study those things so much”.

After eight years of work, the stadium was inaugurated a few weeks ago. The result is a building that “will generate a lot of history for sport in Mexico, and will be the trigger of a higher level of design that will elevate the level of dignity of the people”, in the words of Andrés Vergara.

The construction process would have been impossible without the application of the most cutting-edge technologies, using the most advanced materials and the talent and work of human hands and minds.

“Now that we’ve been at the opening of the stadium, we realized that all attendees became one. This is a phenomenon that football does: it coalesces a large group of people into one that moves in one direction, and I believe that’s what a building like this really brings to a city. A building is nothing if it does not have people within it and that’s the great opportunity that this stadium represents, not only for the public, for the team or for the owner, but also for us”, concludes Luis Fernández de Ortega.

Advice to keep in mind when working with polycarbonate panels

When it comes to choosing the right plastic material for your task at hand, look no further than polycarbonate panels. This material is pretty much unbreakable and usually come in two different iterations; as a

  • multiwall polycarbonate which is a structured sheet that has air chambers which are hollow

Or

  •  solid polycarbonate which is clear, flat sheeting that has the appearance of glass

Both of these polycarbonate panels have their own distinct advantages and it often comes down to which is more aesthetically pleasing for the project at hand rather than the functionality of the panels coming into play.

Polycarbonate PanelsDoes this type of panelling scratch?

While plastic and glass panelling is liable to scratching, the clear polycarbonate sheets surface is a material that has been hardened to withstand high levels of resistant.

If a piece of glass is scratched, the glass breaks away in tiny shards and the scratch is not very visible to the human eye. Alternatively, when plastic panelling is scratched, the fragments don’t break away, they move to another location which leaves a visible indentation that is raised on the surface.

This sort of effect needs to be taken into consideration when you are deciding to use plastic sheeting.

On the other hand, it is a lot harder to cause cracks or breaks in the polycarbonate panels as even though it is half the weight of glass, it is actually more than 200 times stronger than glass.

It is also flexible while maintaining strength levels and rigidity. This is why polycarbonate panels are often used as a guard in moving machinery parts, farming machinery windshields and in security screens.

Does polycarbonate panelling bend?

This type of panelling does bend, which gives you a lot more flexibility when it comes to the design of the project at hand. Larger sheets will have a bend with a greater radius and are well fitted for arching rooves. The greater the thickness and the smaller in size a panel are, the harder it will be to bend.

The advantages of Danpal polycarbonate panels

At Danpal, there are a number of different systems that utilise polycarbonate sheets panels.

One such example is the ventilated rain system which gives a structure an aesthetically pleasing exterior while also efficiently insulating the structure from any damage that may be caused by adverse weather conditions.

Thanks to the air gap, there is a lot of natural ventilation which will allow the insulation to stay dry and perform effectively long into the future.

It is said that approximately 40% of the primary energy consumption comes from the building itself, which is why the Danpal system is so effective when it comes to saving on energy costs.

This extra form of protection is the perfect type of insulation for the task at hand. Best of all, it is quick and easy to install, as well as there being so much choice when it comes to design and the colour of the panelling.
